Keerat Kaur’s artwork will be featured in this year’s Lunar Lanterns!
Nīlā, meaning “blue” in Punjabi, was a blue roan horse in Sikh history, and he has become the starting point for many of my mythological creations.
Nīlā’s Janamsākhī is a quadriptych of four paintings, the final of which will take shape as a lantern. Across this series, I re-envision Nīlā’s origin story: born from the blue sky itself, finding his way upon the earth. In the fourth painting, Bāz, a white hawk also known in Sikh history, descends with the moon in his grasp and offers it to Nīlā so that he may experience a moment of calm and belonging in his newfound home.
