🌿 Bio-based materials in the humanitarian sector: promising, but not without challenges

As part of the WORM project, we’ve explored the potential of bio-based materials to reduce the environmental footprint of humanitarian operations. While BBMs can lower emissions and support circularity, they also come with significant challenges.

To address these challenges, WORM developed Causal Loop Diagrams, a systems-thinking tool that maps relationships between key variables and highlights circular causality.

🚀 As we approach the end of the WORM project, we’re proud to share one of our key legacies: our WORM practice abstracts all published in the EIP-AGRI project database!

💡 The European Innovation Partnership for Agricultural Productivity and Sustainability (EIP-AGRI) database highlights innovative projects from across Europe that foster knowledge exchange and innovation.

Our practice abstracts aim to share the innovative knowledge generated within WORM, ensuring wide dissemination to practitioners, field experts, and end-users 🌱

📢 WORM has contributed to DG ECHO's mapping of life cycle assessments for humanitarian items.

As part of the INSPIRE+ Consortium study, WORM shared its insights on the environmental impact of items, particularly through its work on:

🔹 Bio-based solutions
🔹 Waste treatment

This mapping represents an important step forward, with 89 LCAs now gathered in a new database. This gives humanitarian actors a practical tool with which to make evidence-based decisions, avoid duplication and better understand the environmental impact of the products they use.
