Louisiana Purchase Chapter NSDAR, DeSoto, Missouri The Louisiana Purchase Chapter NSDAR is an active chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution Genevieve.

On October 7, 1916, the Louisiana Purchase Chapter was organized in De Soto, Missouri. The name originally selected was DeSoto-Jefferson Chapter, but when this name was rejected by National, the current name, Louisiana Purchase Chapter, was chosen. The name “perpetuates the memory of the event which doubled the area of the United States and extended the boundaries of the young republic beyond the

Mississippi.”
The Louisiana Purchase Chapter (LPDAR) welcomed members of the now disbanded King’s Trace Chapter of Hillsboro, organized January 30, 1926. This chapter derived its name from the old colonial Spanish road that ran out of St. Louis, across the northeast corner of Jefferson County, along Kimmswick, and on through Ste. The LPDAR Chapter now serves all of Jefferson County. An active Missouri State Society chapter, LPDAR presents DAR Good Citizens awards to senior class students selected from each of Jefferson County’s high schools… We sponsor genealogical workshops, present flags to various youth organizations and schools, participate in local parades, and support our veteran’s organizations and DAR schools through donations. Throughout the year, our chapter meets in local historical and educational sites, to conduct business and enjoy programs of educational, patriotic, or historical interest.

Oh my goodness! What a wonderful meeting we had on December 13! If you weren't there, you really missed out! We awarded what I believe is the first ever Americanism Medal for our Chapter. We recognized a very deserving Patriot of the month. We gave Certificates of Appreciation to two HODAR Helpers and to a very generous Chapter member who supports our Veteran's Luncheon. There are more pictures I will post later.

National Family Literacy Day event, November 1, 2025

We had a good turnout for our National Family Literacy Day event on November 1st in Crystal City that we co-hosted with the Learning Insights Tutoring Center. We were able to give away a lot of free books, presented a few Literacy Promotion Champions Awards, dedicated a Free Little Library, received a Proclamation from Crystal City Mayor Mike Osher. We sold some of our America 250 items and spread the work about DAR, which gave us a possible new prospective member, but most importantly, we had fun!

Meet Dr. Virginia Cole Mahan, US Air Force Veteran and DAR Daughter

On October 25, 2025, the Louisiana Purchase Chapter, NSDAR, had a most exciting and unusual State Regent's Visit, as we travelled from Jefferson County to the Missouri Veterans Home at St. James to welcome not only State Regent Dr. Lisa Parks but to induct our newest DAR member, Virgie Mahan.

Patriot, educator and pioneer of women's rights, Dr. Virginia Cole Mahan was born in St. Louis, Missouri. Her education began in a one room school when she was four years old. She earned her Batchelor's degree at Long Beach College, after which she enlisted in the United States Air Force. She entered the service as a 2nd Lieutenant. She is a Vietnam Veteran because her service at Headquarters, 5th Air Force, in Japan supported Air Force operations in Vietnam.

Virgie stated joining the Air Force was the most important thing she ever did. Her reason for joining? "Patriotism," she says proudly.

She left the Air Force as a Captain and went on to have a long and distinguished career in public relations. She earned her Master's degree at Wright State University and her Doctorate in Special Education at the University of Cincinnati, and worked as an adjunct professor for Drury University.

Dr. Virginia Cole Mahan's professional legacy helped to pave the say for many women who followed her.

After Dr. Parks inducted Dr. Mahan as a Daughter of the American Revolution - her Patriot being Captain Henry Whitener, Jr - the Chapter honored Virgie with a Women in American History award, as our Patriot of the Month, and as a Literacy Champion. The mayor of St. James issued a proclamation honoring Dr. Mahan, and several other committees made donations to the Veteran's Home in Virgie's honor.

Following the ceremony, everyone enjoyed a carry-in luncheon.
