We're looking for our first Confident Home Educators! This October, we'll be running the very first trial of our brand-new Confident Home Educator Course, and we're looking for a small group of parents to help us shape it.

If you're considering home education, have recently started your journey, or simply want a clearer understanding of what home education can look like in practice, we'd love to hear from you.

Over six weeks, you'll take part in the full course, receiving a new lesson each week, opportunities to ask questions throughout, and regular feedback and support as you work through the programme.

In return, we're asking participants to fully engage with the course and provide honest feedback to help us refine and improve it before its official launch.

As a thank you for your time and contribution, you'll receive the entire course completely free of charge.

📅 Course Trial: 6 weeks
📍 Starts: First week of October
💷 Cost: Free for selected trial participants

If you'd like to be part of the very first Confident Home Educator Course, send us a message or register your interest via the contact form on our site. We'd love to have you involved!

As we mentioned last week, our first proposal ever was to visit the local park every other week. Only a week after that decision, another proposal was handed in asking the community to go out EVERY Wednesday. There were no objections. However a lively discussion ensued on 'where to go'?!
In the end the community wrote down a list of favourite spots around the local area and decided to visit those on a rotation basis. Which means at least every 8 weeks we head a little further into the park, where the grassy fields are vaster, the trees taller and many dog friends can be made. Under the Turkish oaks we often get the watercolour paints out, and this is also the spot where our nature matching cards, colour frames and little identification books get the most use.

What is the role of the adult at Noughtcross Haus? Here, adults are part of the community, not leading it.

We don't see ourselves as authoritarians whose role is to control every decision or direct every moment of learning. Instead, we become elders within the community.

We listen before we speak. We observe before we intervene. We ask questions rather than always providing answers.

Our role is to create an environment where children feel safe, respected and empowered to explore their interests, contribute to the community and grow in confidence. We facilitate learning rather than dictate it.

We support children in navigating challenges, encourage them to think critically, help them access opportunities and trust them to take increasing ownership of their own learning and responsibilities.

Being an elder doesn't mean stepping back. It means stepping alongside.

Because we believe some of the most meaningful learning happens not when adults lead from the front, but when they walk alongside young people as trusted members of the same community.

As we prepare to launch our Confident Home Educator Course in January 2026, we want to make sure we're creating something that genuinely supports families, not just another online course.

Whether you're just beginning to explore home education, considering taking your child out of school, or already on your journey, we'd love to hear from you.

Tell us in the comments or DM:
❔ What questions do you have?
❔What worries you?
❔ What feels overwhelming?
❔ What do you wish somebody had explained sooner?

Your answers will help shape the course, ensuring we focus on the topics that matter most to parents.

We'll also be running a free six-week trial of the course from October, and we're looking for a small group of parents to take part. In return for fully participating and sharing your feedback, you'll receive the course completely free of charge.

If you'd like to help shape the course, or join the October trial, we'd love to hear from you.

👉 Register your interest through the contact form on our website or send us a DM.

On Wednesdays we go outside!

Our very first proposal by a young community member was the request to schedule a visit to the basketball courts at our local park every other week. The member is a keen footballer and wanted to practice his skills during community hours. As the tarmac courts not only offer football goals, but basketball hoops, some smaller trees nearby, a gnarly bush perfect for den making and are adjacent to a small grassed field, the proposal was unanimously accepted.
Any member not as eager to kick a ball, might be found throwing hoops or cartwheeling around the grass, playing chase, climbing trees, den building, rollerskating or just lounging in the grass. Sometimes 'pokémon battles' erupt on the field and everyone joins in and one summer the community invented a lift for the nearby cherry tree, which blooms the prettiest pink in spring.

What is the Judicial Committee?

Because conflict is a natural part of community life, it's important that everyone has a fair way to be heard.

At Noughtcross Haus, every member of the community, child or elder, has the opportunity to raise a concern if they believe a community agreement has been broken or if they feel they have been treated unfairly.

The Judicial Committee provides a respectful space where everyone involved can share their perspective. Together, the committee listens, asks questions and works towards an outcome that helps repair relationships and support the community.

That outcome might be an apology, a new agreement, an adjustment to an existing one or another solution that the committee believes is fair.

The aim isn't punishment. It's accountability, understanding and finding a way forward together.

Through this process, children experience what fairness, responsibility and justice can look like when they are practised within a caring community, not imposed from above.

Coming January 2027... Noughtcross Haus' Confident Home Educator Course!

Having doubts about mainstream education, but uncertain what to do?
Thinking about home education, but not sure where to start?

Perhaps you've been wondering if it could work for your family, but the information online feels overwhelming, contradictory or simply doesn't seem to paint a reliable picture of what day-to-day life can actually look like.

That's exactly why we're creating this course.

Designed for parents who are curious about home education, this guided programme will help you understand the practical realities, explore different approaches to learning and give you the knowledge and confidence to decide what feels right for your family.

Each week you'll receive a new lesson exploring a different aspect of home education, alongside practical guidance, real-life examples and opportunities to reflect on the knowledge and how it might apply to you and your family.

Most importantly, you won't be doing it alone.

Throughout the course you'll be able to ask questions, receive weekly feedback and be supported as you explore what home education could look like in your own home.

Whether you're simply exploring your options or are ready to take the next step, we'd love to help you make an informed decision.

More information, course dates, pricing and booking details will be announced soon!

If you'd like to be the first to hear when enrolment opens, keep an eye on our page over the coming weeks.

When our community was gifted a dolls' house, it had certainly seen better days.

Because of its size, our landlords kindly agreed it could have a permanent home at Noughtcross Haus, but only if it was renovated to fit the space. So, rather than asking an elder to organise it, the idea was brought to the community as a proposal.

The community agreed to take on the project and set themselves the goal of completing it before the end of the summer term. From there, the project became theirs.

A Project Manager role was created, volunteers put themselves forward and the community held a secret ballot to decide who would lead the renovation.

With support from an elder, the successful Project Manager created a plan, identified everything that needed doing and delegated tasks across the volunteer team.

The project was a real-life experience of collaboration, leadership, planning, teamwork and shared responsibility. At Noughtcross Haus, projects like these aren't simulations or role play. They're genuine opportunities for children to make decisions, solve problems and work together towards a shared goal.

Because some of the most meaningful learning happens when the work truly belongs to the people doing it.

Conflict is often seen as something to avoid. At Noughtcross Haus, we see it differently.

Disagreements, misunderstandings and differing opinions are a natural part of living in any community. Rather than stepping in to solve every problem for children, we support them in learning how to navigate conflict with honesty, empathy and respect.

These moments help children develop skills they'll carry throughout life: listening to different perspectives, expressing themselves clearly, taking responsibility for their actions and understanding how those actions affect others.

By learning to work through challenges together, children build resilience, confidence and stronger relationships. They discover that disagreements don't have to end friendships and that being heard is just as important as learning to listen.

Because real life isn't conflict-free, learning how to resolve it is one of the most valuable lessons we can offer.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Summer Party!

It was wonderful to welcome so many new and familiar faces, answer your questions, share our philosophy and spend time connecting with families who are exploring different approaches to education.

As we now head into our summer break, we'd like to wish all of our families a restful, adventurous and joy-filled summer. We hope it's filled with opportunities to explore, connect and make wonderful memories together.

We'll be back in September, ready to welcome both familiar and new faces as we begin another exciting chapter at Noughtcross Haus 💚
