Sunnyland and Roosevelt neighbors: let’s get together and celebrate the end of summer!

Join us in Memorial Park on Tuesday, August 25 from 5 to 7 PM. We’ll have games and activities for all ages, guests from the Bellingham Fire and Police Departments, and a free hotdog and bag of chips for each of you. Plus, free Moon Pops sponsored by Justin S. Nelson.

Bring chairs or a blanket to sit on, and feel free to bring a treat to share for the dessert potluck. New this year: Boba & Bites will be there with a selection of drinks for sale, plus some free samples to try!

Note: no restroom is available at Memorial Park, so plan accordingly!

Thank you to our picnic sponsors, Justin S. Nelson and Joy of Pilates & Fitness 🌞! We couldn’t put on this wonderful, free event without their support. We are still seeking additional sponsors to help out with the picnic. If your business would like to sign on as a sponsor, please get in touch!

What a beautiful crowd of people this afternoon at the bench dedication of James Okubo. Thank you to those of you who attended! If you missed it, be sure to visit the bench soon (south end of the park along King street) and read our May 2025 and 2026 newsletters for a short profile of Okubo, a son of Bellingham with a remarkable story.

Thank you to Nikkei Northwest for making us aware of James’s story, and to VFW 1585 for cohosting this meaningful event today.

Our neighborhood-wide yard sale date has been chosen! Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 20th, and get ready to shop. Planning to have a sale this year? Register by June 12th and we’ll drop off a yard sign and add you to the master map.

Last year we had over 50 sales within the neighborhood, and we already have 20 on the map for this year (including a curated French Flea Market at Martini Mercantile...) so be sure to check back a couple of days before sale day to plan your ultimate Sunnyland bargain hunt.

Nikkei Northwest, VFW Post 1585, and the Sunnyland Neighborhood Association will come together to dedicate the James K. Okubo Memorial Bench during a ceremony on May 30, 2026, at 1:00pm.

The ceremony will honor James Kazuo Okubo, who is the only Congressional Medal of Honor recipient from Whatcom County. James was interned in a concentration camp but later served as a medic in the US military. SNA installed a bench in Memorial Park last year that features a plaque honoring James. For more information on James, read his story in our May 2025 newsletter or the 2017 Seattle Times profile (shared in stories today).

Join Mayor Lund and her team on May 20th from 5:30 to 7:00 PM for a special public meeting, co-hosted at Structures Old Town location with the Downtown Bellingham Partnership. This forum is the second of three planned “Ask Us Anything” events that the Mayor’s office is hosting this year. The first in the series took place at the Fairhaven Cruise Terminal, aiming to reach southern Bellingham neighborhoods. This month, the focus is on the central neighborhoods, which includes Sunnyland (though anyone is welcome to attend any of the three sessions).

The event opens at 5:30 PM, giving attendees time to grab a drink and snacks and settle in before the meeting begins at 6:00 PM. Mayor Kim Lund and City of Bellingham’s department heads will discuss what they are working on related to Downtown, and attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions to the panel. Food and beverages are available for purchase, though purchase is not required to attend this free event.
