SCB Oceania is thrilled to announce an upcoming webinar with Natalie Kyriacou OAM to discuss her recent book Nature's Last Dance - Tales of Wonder in an Age of Extinction.

The book provides a fascinating, meticulously researched and often highly humourous look at some of the world's most weird and wonderful creatures. It is also an extremely heartfelt tribute to the conservation professionals and advocates throughout the world who are fighting ongoing ecosystem decline.

Natalie leads by example - she is a board director at the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife, a board committee member at CARE Australia, the founder and chair of My Green World, a UNESCO Green Citizens Pathfinder, a member of the XPrize Brain Trust for Biodiversity and Conservation, and an Australian delegate and Climate Justice Lead at the W20 (the official engagement group of the G20).
We can't wait to come together for an inspiring webinar with Natalie! This event is free, but registration is essential.

But wait there's more! By registering to attend, you have a chance to win a copy of Natalie's fabulous book courtesy of SCB Oceania. We will randomly select two winners from amongst the webinar registrants BUT you need to be present at the webinar on the day to claim.

These were some of your favourite good news stories from Oceania 😁

Amongst the climate challenges and biodiversity crises, we hope this has been a reminder that researchers, citizen scientists, conservation practitioners and communities are working tirelessly for our threatened species and ecological communities - developing new technologies and revitalising ancient stewardship practices.

Stay optimistic! The science shows - positive emotions enable creativity, cooperation, and resilience, which are all essential for overcoming the challenging nature of acting on the biodiversity crisis.

Already in decline from Phytophthora dieback, critically endangered flora species on WA’s Bluff Knoll were driven to the edge of extinction by bushfires in 2018 / 2019.

Thankfully, seeds from these plant species had already been collected and stored at the WA Seed Centre at DBCA in Kensington. The Seed Centre is designed for exactly this purpose—to act as a Noah’s Ark of plant species should their natural populations suffer in the wild.

Using these seeds, DBCA staff were able to germinate seedlings from 14 critically endangered species including Banksia montana. Seedlings were transplanted in 2021, and seeds from mature plants now flourishing in seed production areas are being collected to use for future recovery efforts.

The Yato Conservation Area is now the largest forest protected area in Solomon Islands, covering c. 12,000 ha of primary rainforest and cloud forest in East Makira.
No logging, mining or other destructive environmental activities will be allowed to take place on the declared area. Customary landowners from five communities are in the process of developing a carbon project to receive economic, social and environmental benefits.
Forests of Makira are home to 32 bird species, including the rare Yellow-legged pigeon, and 21 animals which are endemic to the island. There are also more than 100 recorded flora in the Yato forest area, with 21 plants only found on Makira.

Giant clams are thriving in a Fiji Ministry of Fisheries restoration project success. Monitoring revealed 100% survival of Tridacna maxima seeds released in the area, clams growing to 4x their original size & high biodiversity in protected cages.

The results position Vorovoro as a leading example of effective marine conservation and long-term sustainability.

BirdLife Australia are celebrating the formation of the National Australasian Bittern Recovery Team.
The Australasian Bittern has faced considerable decline due to the loss and degradation of it's wetland habitat.

BirdLife's citizen scientist Birddata program contributed immensly to provide evidence of its decline and support efforts to uplist the species to Endangered, one again highlighting how integram citizen contributions are to science. The first step in this call to action has been answered by the Australian Government funding the Recovery Team. Together these experts will provide guidance and oversight of the steps required to bring this species back from the brink.

Theonila Roka Matbob, an Indigenous Nasioi woman from PNG, is one of this year's Goldman Environmental Prize winners. She is being recognised with a "Green Nobel Prize" for her efforts to repair environmental and social harms caused by a copper and gold mine.

Theonila Roka Matbob led a successful campaign that compelled Rio Tinto, the world’s second-largest mining company, to sign a landmark memorandum of understanding in November 2024 to address environmental and social devastation caused by its long-dormant Panguna mine. Despite having abandoned the site 35 years earlier after a social uprising against the mine, the company formally acknowledged the wide range of harms the mine has caused and has begun a collaborative remediation process that aims to address urgent risks and establish a long-term remedy mechanism.
