Always wanted to read Korean but never known where to start? This one is for you.

We're really pleased to introduce Talk To Me In Korean as one of our sponsors for the IKAA Korea Gathering 2026, and we're kicking things off together with The Hangeul Challenge.

It's a free, self-paced online course that takes you from complete beginner to reading Hangeul on your own in just seven days. Around 30 minutes a day, seven days in a row, and you can do it with your morning coffee, on the train, or last thing at night. Whatever fits your life.

No prior Korean needed, and you don't have to be attending the Gathering to join. It's open to the whole Korean adoptee community, and you'll get a certificate when you finish.

Starts 31 August 2026, so sign up before 30 August.

Registration for the Gathering is nearly full! We encourage you to register soon, as capacity is limited to 600 attendees. If capacity is reached before registration closes at the end of July, a waitlist will be opened.

We continue our volunteer spotlight series, where we introduce the volunteers you'll meet at the next IKAA Gathering in Seoul this October.

Next up is Tanya Kaanta.

Tanya was born in South Korea and splits her time between Denver, Colorado and Panama City, Panama. She first connected with the adoptee community in 1993 and most recently met up with IKAA folks at a KAAN leadership symposium last year.

She is an active member of KAAN, TIES, and Adoption Mosaic, and says her Korean heritage has shaped everything, from her healing journey to how she shows up for her partner, her children, and her friends. She loves the diversity, strength, compassion, and humour of this community.

“IKAA was an incredibly powerful event. Gatherings such as this are profoundly meaningful for our community.

It's a moment to reflect on our stories, selves, and community, and many of us come away with connections that feel like family - something that we have all been yearning for and deserving of.

The realities of the Western adoption industrial complex have caused the need for such community and gatherings, an absolute unfair and destructive reality.

While I wish there wasn't a need for gatherings like IKAA, I am beyond grateful and proud that it exists.

We were never intended to come together in such a way, and doing so is one way that we can reclaim our power and personhood.”

Creative arts and expression played an important role at the 2023 Korea Gathering.

Across many mediums, artists and performers helped give voice to the complexities of the adoptee experience.

We are deeply grateful to those who shared their work and helped us better understand ourselves and one another.

The IKAA Korea Gathering is a global homecoming.

In 2023, attendees travelled to Seoul from 18 countries, bringing the voices of their local communities and reconnecting with one another in our shared motherland.

“IKAA G23 helped shine a new light and raise curiosity about my Korean adoptee identity.

Meeting other Korean and transnational adoptees from around the world was both invigorating and overwhelming.

I left the gathering feeling more connected to my roots and a greater sense of pride about my heritage thanks to the incredible and vulnerable presenters and generous friends I made throughout the week.”

Behind every Korea Gathering are passionate volunteers who make it all possible.

From planners to presenters and on the ground support. They give their time, energy, and voices to create something bigger than any one organization.

This work reflects the overall adoptee community where individuals and groups come together to support, uplift, and inspire one another.

“As a first-time attendee to the Gathering and a first-time visit back to Korea, I am more than glad that I decided to attend IKAA G23! This trip ended up meaning so much more to me than I initially expected.

I left Korea with new friends and knowing that there is a community out there that I belong to.

This conference has helped me want to find out more about what it means to be a Korean adoptee.

Most of all, it has left me wanting to come back to experience it more!”
