Vale Des Radburn
There has been a couple of posts about the unfortunate passing of Des already, but it is hard not to acknowledge the true contribution this man made to hydroplane racing, primarily within NSW, but all across the country.
Des had won nearly all of the big trophies available for hydro racing in this country, and NZ. Some of the accolades include winning the A.E. Baker, the Eastway Shield, Col. Coates Unlimited, 100mph badge #24 (120.59mph in 1968), and a couple of podiums for the E.C. Griffith Cup. However, it was an outright win for the E.C. Griffith Cup that always eluded Des.
He was also a major part of the NSW Hydroplane Club, being part of the Race Committee for many, many years. And we certainly can't miss that he was a Life Member of the club for over 25 years!
All of this, plus he was simply one of those guys that you would want to be at a race meeting. Competitive out on the water, but a great mate to everyone in the pits and on the bank.
Our sincere condolences to Des' family and friends.

Massive congratulations to Ricky Howard, at the wheel of GP888 White Noise, owned by Grant & Karin Heeley, for taking out the E.C. Griffith Cup for the 2nd year in a row. One hell of an achievement!
Well done to the whole team.

Our fearless leader, president Ricky Howard, at the wheel of the GP WhiteNoise, has bit of an uphill challenge in Heat 1 of the EC Griffith Cup, being on the outside of boats like Warlord, and The Gator (a 6litre hydro dark horse) - but we know the team can still do it!

Hydroplane restoration project - for free!
This hull looks to be a Healy Hydro, set up as a rear seater / conventional. Ran with a 350 Chev.
Originally ran in Vic as Orca, then it moved to Tas. Then it ran as Crackerjack, and most recently as Jubilee. Boat is located in Tasmania.
Note - trailer in pics not included.

Great to see this boat back out on the water! Now known as The Muffin Man down in Tassie, the boat used to be known as The Bug, most notably under Andrew Petty around the traps in NSW, in the early 2000's.
One for the straight six Holden fans. Very cool!

Ever wondered what it's like in the pilot's seat of a turbine powered Unlimited Hydroplane?
Check this video out, for a full race from the point of view of left edge of the pilot's helmet. From the 5-minute gun start up, to jossling for lane choice, a full 5 laps of flat out racing, then the cool down, and back to the dock.
You'll be glad you did.

For sale - Condor
19ft Ron Jones hydroplane, originally built circa 1968. Was set up with a 283 Chev, and was campaigned by Don & Bill Turnbull in NSW. Has been garaged for approximately 20 years. Minor repair to stern is required. And will most likely need a new trailer.
Located on the Mid-North Coast of NSW.
