I'm so excited to be able to attend the Rx & Illicit Drug Summit again this year! There are some amazing folks from across in attendance, with collaboration and problem-solving happening in real-time.

can mean different things to different people, but in the "Rural Region" of Nevada, we tend to think of it as maintenance of sobriety after recovering from substance misuse, and even maintaining more positive mental health after overcoming mental illness. There are many factors that can influence an individual's ability to achieve and/or maintain Recovery, but the community around us can be a huge part of success.

What do you feel are rural Nevada's greatest assets and strengths within communities that can support people in recovery?

Today stakeholders from across the and criminal justice systems (CJS) serving Elko County completed the first half of a two day Sequential Intercept Mapping (SIM) workshop, facilitated by a fantastic team from PRA and funded through a grant from the GAINS Center. The SIM process walks participants through various transition points and settings within the CJS and community services to identify assets, gaps, opportunities, and challenges in building programming to reduce recidivism among people involved in the CJS though addressing mental health and substance use issues when they are at the root of the individual's challenges.

The information gathered during this SIM workshop will be used to develop Elko's new Mental Health Court, which is designed to help people who are in jail due to their mental health challenges get the treatment they need and achieve stability within their lives. *When done correctly and with adequate resources*, mental health and other specialty courts can make a large difference in communities by improving behavioral health outcomes for participants, decreasing re-offense and recidivism, and reducing the use of public funds and other resources otherwise needed for jails, regular courts, and law enforcement calls for service. Good programming can both help people live happier, safer lives AND save tax-payer dollars.
