North Dakota Badlands Horse This page is dedicated to the wild horses of Theodore Roosevelt National Park in western North Dakota. In 2015 and 2016 NDBH found good homes for 54 horses.

North Dakota Badlands Horse believes the iconic Theodore Roosevelt National Park herd should be managed with a plan based on evidence based scientific practices that ensure a sustainable healthy, genetically diverse herd for decades to come.
Marylu Weber and her husband Henry are the founders of this non-profit. They have been devoted to these horses for many decades documenting and photographin

g them closely. In 2009, the NDBH was formed to give a voice to the horses and find qualified people to buy them. In March of 2015 a partnership Agreement was signed for the benefit of the horses. That PA meant that NO helicopters were used to gather horses and none would go to a sale barn where kill buyers waited to buy. Park personnel along with North Dakota Badlands Horse volunteers cooperated to gather horses by low-stress, respectful methods. Since then NDBH has worked very hard to encourage qualified people to give them homes when they were sold through the General Serviced Administration. We keep in touch with these owners, calling them family, and giving them ways to fellowship with one another online and in person.

This spring in TRNP has been full of drama! This past weekend was no different. I had hiked to check on Marty’s (Maverick) band and new band stallion Tibbs (Cody) was also in the area. Tibbs and his band were hanging too close to Marty’s band and he took off to confront them. They shared a few words, Marty had the upper hand but Tibbs was able to get a few kicks in. Both stallions came out with just a few bite marks. Tibbs also didn’t take the hint as he continued to push Marty’s boundaries.

Enjoy this look at these two handsome stallions in TRNP! ~Sierra

I had the pleasure of spending time with stallion Marty and his band over the weekend. I spotted them from a distance and quickly noticed that he had a few extra mares. I hiked to them to confirm and sure enough he has recently added stallion Arcola’s mares to his band. Mares Busy Blue, Beetree (Bee) and Willa (Gidget) are all looking good and sticking close together as they find their place within the band. Only time will tell if Marty is able to hold onto these girls.

I was also able to find Arcola today and he seems to be ok, he is by himself at the moment.

Never a dull moment in TRNP, stay tuned! ~Sierra

In April, 3-year-old filly Everly (Willow) was found alone. A few bachelors and band stallions pursued her but she seems to prefer being on her own. A few days later bachelor stallions Tibbs (Cody) and Chance (Moon Shadow) came across her. Tibbs claimed her as his own and she stayed with him. Not long after, Everly’s 2-year-old brother Waylon (Dillinger), was kicked out of the band. He was a bachelor for a few days until Everly and Tibbs took him in. The three have now been together for a few weeks and appear to be getting along well.

As always stay tuned! I have another band update to share with you tomorrow. ~Sierra

Last night was one of those nights that I am always thankful for! I was blessed to spend my evening surrounded by 75 wild horses and beautiful rain clouds rolling in after a very dry spring. There were 8 bands hanging around the park’s east fence, they were: Anzar, Arrowhead, Denver (Chance), Duke (Beau), Evans (Re*****on), Illinois (Buster), Vamoose (Ollie Jr) and Xander.

There were also six bachelors in the area: Amite, Bartonia, Bloom (Boomer), Chance (Moon Shadow), Coy, and Marquis. These boys usually bring some chaos and they didn’t disappoint as they sparred with some of the young stallions that still remain with their bands. I will share more on that and the bands in the coming weeks. For now, I wanted to share a few of my favorite photos from the night.

Have a great night! ~Sierra

Today I wanted to share an update on Half Moon’s band after his passing last week. They are now with the young stallion Duke (Beau), he was born in 2021 to Pretty Girl and RedFace. He seems to be doing a great job of looking after the mares so far.

Three of Half Moon’s daughters remain in the band; they are Berryhill (Star), Eve (Brandy), and Lainey (Josie).

As always stay tuned, there are lots of changes happening this spring!

Recently 2010 stallion Teton started following his old band, now led by his son Apex. He appears to want his mares back but Apex is having none of it. He lets Teton follow from a distance but maintains a perimeter around the band.

Teton held his band of mares for many years, up until last spring when his son, 7 year-old Apex, stole them. Teton took the time to heal and rest before he made a move to get his mares back. Only time will tell if he is able to take some mares back. As always, stay tuned.

Have a great night! ~Sierra

Half Moon, the magnificent stallion of Theodore Roosevelt National Park, has died. No one knows what happened to him; he appeared fine the night before. It is difficult losing these beautiful horses so unexpectedly but sometimes we have no answers. Half Moon was born in 2010 to mare Lacey and stallion Mystery (both deceased). He was a band stallion up until the end, his band is now led by the young stallion Duke (Beau). His legacy will live on in his fillies and c**ts and he will always be remembered in the hearts of people all over the world. Half Moon sired 12 foals, 9 remain in the park. They are: Maine (Patches), Aloe, Beaver, Berryhill (Star), Nadia (Sienna), Serendipity (Pepper), Chance (Moon Shadow), Eve (Brandy), Lainey (Josie).

Many magnificent stallions and beloved mares have died in the park. It is always painful to lose them when we have grown to love them like our own.
We recognize the grief everyone feels when something like this happens, and we grieve with you. However, we will choose to remember him as he lived, strong, wild, running across the buttes with his mares and foals, their manes, and tails streaming in the wind.

Half Moon has truly left hoof-prints on the hearts of all those who loved and admired him. May he rest in peace in the green pastures of heaven.

Over the past few weeks I have been fortunate to spend some time with Anzar and his band on multiple occasions! Anzar was born in 2019 to Dolly and Flax. He has been a band stallion for a few years now and currently holds a band of six mares and a 2 year-old c**t.
They are:
2006 mare Dolly
2013 mare Mischief (Maggie Mae)
2014 mare Kat (Thunder Rose)
2019 mare Amargo
2020 mare Bluff
2020 mare Briar (Bess)
2024 c**t Lonestar (Casey)

Enjoy and have a great night! ~Sierra

We were able to hike to Flax’s band recently, we had a great visit with them! Flax has kept his band hidden since last fall in a new area for them. They are all looking great this spring! Flax’s band looks a bit different than it used to, he often had sorrels as well as a few roans. His band is now made up of black and gray mares.

Enjoy this look at Flax and his band! ~Sierra
