Opening film of the ACID Cannes 2024, winner of the Best Newcomer and Best Actress awards at the 2025 Hellenic Film Academy Awards, and recipient of the Finos Film Award and Audience Award at the 2024 Thessaloniki Film Festival, Kyuka: Before Summer’s End is the debut feature by Greek filmmaker Kostis Charamountanis. The film screens on Wednesday 14 October at 8:00 PM as part of the 30th European Film Festival in Lebanon.

Summer unfolds aboard a family sailboat, where Babis, a single father, sets off for the Greek island of Poros with his twin children, Konstantinos and Elsa, on the threshold of adulthood. But an unexpected encounter with their birth mother, whom they have never known, turns their holiday into a journey of discovery, reopening old wounds and unsettling the delicate balance of their family.

Sun-drenched and bittersweet, Kyuka: Before Summer’s End captures the awkwardness of growing up, the complexities of family ties and the melancholy of a summer that cannot last forever. Selected as the opening film of ACID Cannes 2024, Charamountanis’s first feature blends humour, experimentation and the lingering ache of things left unsaid.

Inspired by Stefan Zweig’s The Royal Game, winner of four awards at the 2025 Berlin South East European Film Festival, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Script, Mastergame by Barnabás Tóth is a psychological thriller where every move can change everything. The film screens as part of the 30th European Film Festival in Lebanon.

As Soviet tanks invade Hungary in 1956, a young couple of rebels boards a refugee train in a desperate attempt to escape. During a game of chess, stories begin to emerge, secrets surface, and the line between reality and illusion grows increasingly uncertain. What appears to be one story soon reveals itself to be something else entirely.

Blending historical drama with the tension of a psychological thriller, Mastergame transforms the chessboard into a game of strategy, deception and survival, where nothing is quite as it seems.

We are delighted to welcome Jean-Michel Frodon as our special guest at the 30th European Film Festival in Lebanon. Journalist, film critic and educator, Frodon formerly headed the film section at Le Monde and served as editor-in-chief of Cahiers du cinéma. He teaches at Sciences Po Paris and is Honorary Professor at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. Author and editor of around thirty books on cinema, he continues to explore the seventh art through his writing, teaching, curatorial work and film programming.

Join him for a special double bill bringing two films into conversation: Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague, a playful recreation of the making of Jean-Luc Godard’s À bout de souffle, and Godard’s landmark film itself. One revisits the birth of a cinematic revolution; the other lets us experience its audacity on the big screen.

DOUBLE BILL: NOUVELLE VAGUE + À BOUT DE SOUFFLE

Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague takes us back to the making of Jean-Luc Godard’s À bout de souffle, the landmark film that helped define the French New Wave and changed the language of cinema. Presented back-to-back with Godard’s classic in its restored version, this special double bill offers a chance to discover the story behind a film that broke the rules and to experience the original on the big screen. The Lebanese premiere was followed by a Q&A with director George Peter Barbari, the producer, actress Christelle Younes, and members of the film team, who joined the audience for a conversation around the film.

Winner of the Best Actor Award in the Crystal Globe Competition at the 2024 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, awarded to Ton Kas and Guido Pollemans, Three Days of Fish by Dutch filmmaker Peter Hoogendoorn screens on Tuesday 13 October at 9:15 PM as part of the 30th European Film Festival in Lebanon.

Every year, 65-year-old Gerrie returns from Portugal to Rotterdam for his medical check-ups and a brief reunion with his 45-year-old son, Dick. Over the course of three days, their awkward exchanges, familiar routines and unspoken emotions reveal the tenderness and tension of a relationship shaped by distance and the difficulty of expressing affection.

Described by The Film Verdict as “a wry, tender, tragicomic gem,” this understated black-and-white film finds both humour and melancholy in the everyday, offering a moving portrait of a father and son struggling to find their way towards each other.

Winner of Best International Feature at the 2026 Manchester Film Festival and Best Foreign Film at the 2026 Hellenic Film Academy Awards, Maricel by Elias Demetriou screens on Tuesday 13 October at 6.00 PM as part of the 30th European Film Festival in Lebanon.

A Filipino domestic worker arrives in a mountain village in Cyprus to care for an elderly couple. What begins as a straightforward caregiving arrangement gradually reveals layers of silent resentment, emotional dependency and unspoken histories, drawing Maricel into the delicate and unsettling space between obligation and intimacy.

With a sensitive eye for the complexities of human relationships, Demetriou explores the tensions that emerge when strangers share a home, and when the boundaries between care, duty and attachment begin to blur.

Winner of the Caméra d’Or Special Mention at the 2025 Festival de Cannes and the BAFTA Award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer, My Father’s Shadow is the acclaimed first feature by British-Nigerian filmmaker Akinola Davies Jr. The film screens on Monday 12 October at 9:30 PM as part of the 30th European Film Festival in Lebanon.

Set in Lagos during Nigeria’s 1993 election crisis, the film follows two young brothers as they spend a rare day with their estranged father, travelling through a city gripped by political uncertainty. Through the boys’ eyes, this journey becomes an intimate encounter with a father they are still trying to understand, and a country on the brink of upheaval.

Described by Sight and Sound as “an exquisite exploration of family bonds,” Davies Jr.’s deeply personal film brings together childhood memories, family ties and the political history of Nigeria in a moving portrait of love, absence and all that remains unspoken.

Winner of the Palme d’Or at the 2025 Festival de Cannes and nominated for two Academy Awards, including Best International Feature Film and Best Original Screenplay, Un simple accident is the latest film by acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi. It screens on Monday 12 October at 6:00 PM and Friday 16 October at 9:15 PM as part of the 30th European Film Festival in Lebanon.

When a chance encounter leads Vahid to believe he has recognised the man who tortured him in prison, a seemingly simple decision sets off a chain of events that will test the limits of justice, revenge and forgiveness.

Blending satire, dark comedy and moments of horror, Panahi turns this encounter into a gripping moral thriller. As The Guardian observes, the film brings together these contrasting tones to confront the brutality of state violence and the unsettling moral questions that emerge when the possibility of revenge presents itself.

Winner of Best Score and Best Sound at the 2025 Bulgarian Film Academy Awards, Wild Strawberries by Tatyana Pandurska screens as part of the 30th European Film Festival in Lebanon on October 12 at 8.30 PM (followed by a Q&A with the director) and on October 14 at 6.00PM

Burned out by her life in New York, Daphne, an architect, travels to Bulgaria’s Rhodope Mountains to inherit the house of a grandmother she never knew. But her eccentric local cousin Orlin has other plans, hoping to take the property for himself by concealing its true value.

Described by Eye for Film as “a tender, sun-dappled comedy-drama,” the film explores belonging, inheritance and quiet deceit against the evocative landscapes of the Rhodope Mountains.
