Winner of the Jury Prize at Cannes 2025, Sirāt by Oliver Laxe is now showing at Metropolis Cinema!

A father and son cross the Moroccan desert in search of a missing daughter, following a trail of ravers and wanderers into an increasingly uncertain landscape. A hypnotic road movie and spiritual odyssey, Sirāt is a journey through loss, longing, and the search for meaning at the edge of the world.

Join us for the launch of the first volume of the three-volume series The Collected Writings (1991–2024) of a Mortal to Death: Jalal Toufic. The evening will include a short talk by Jalal Toufic, followed by a conversation with artist Walid Raad, a Q&A with the audience, and a book signing.

Volume 1 (2025) includes newly revised editions of Toufic’s first three books—Distracted (1991/2003), (Vampires): An Uneasy Essay on the Undead in Film (1993/2003), and Over-Sensitivity (1996/2009)—together with the script Jouissance in Postwar Beirut (2014) and a new book, The Unreviewed Writings of a Peerless Thinker (2024).

Jalal Toufic is “today, and has been for some time, the most original thinker on the planet” (Etel Adnan), in other words, “one of the most important ‘living’ writers (I put the word ‘living’ in quotation marks for Toufic would never refer to himself as solely a living writer, but more as a writer and a mortal to death)” (Walid Raad).

Through the power of cinema, the festival brings audiences together, despite challenging circumstances, to discover the diversity of contemporary Brazilian storytelling.
This year’s edition brings together a vibrant selection of contemporary Brazilian cinema, showcasing some of the country’s most acclaimed recent productions alongside a landmark classic.

What a pleasure it was to encounter the world of Oliver Laxe up close.

Yesterday, audiences joined the acclaimed filmmaker for a Masterclass that journeyed through his singular body of work, from remote landscapes and spiritual quests to his distinctive approach to working with non-professional actors and crafting cinema that speaks as much to the senses as it does to the soul.

Thank you, Oliver Laxe, for your generosity, your insights, and for sharing the artistic journey behind your films. And thank you to everyone who joined us for this memorable exchange.

Because cinema is not only a place to watch films, it is also a place to discuss them, question them, learn from them, and deepen our understanding of the art form through encounters with the people who create it.

Yesterday, we welcomed Oliver Laxe for the screening of Sirāt, part of a night where cinema becomes a journey through landscapes, faith, and transcendence.

A presence that stayed with us, especially through these words:
“Don’t worry, I will always find a way to be with you in Beirut.”

Today, the encounter continues with a Master Class at Metropolis Cinema, where Laxe opens up his practice across four award-winning feature films, including his latest techno-odyssey Sirāt, discussing shooting in uncharted territories, working with non-professional actors, and crafting stories where body, spirit, and the state of the world are inseparable.
