Umrao Jaan | Wednesday 12 August - 20.00

As the sun sets, step into the enchanting world of Umrao Jaan. 💫

Experience the breathtaking beauty of its restored version on the big screen, beneath the stars, just as classic cinema deserves to be seen.
At the heart of Umrao Jaan lies one of the most treasured musical scores in Indian cinema.

Blending the elegance of classical Hindustani music with the intimacy of the ghazal tradition, every song is woven seamlessly into the story, not as an interlude, but as an expression of longing, love, memory, and loss. From the haunting beauty of Dil Cheez Kya Hai to the quiet melancholy of In Aankhon Ki Masti and Yeh Kya Jagah Hai Doston, each composition has become timeless in its own right.

Winner of four National Film Awards, including Best Actress, Best Art Direction, Best Music Direction, and Best Female Playback Singer, Umrao Jaan (1981) remains one of the defining masterpieces of Indian cinema.

Directed by Muzaffar Ali and adapted from Mirza Hadi Ruswa’s celebrated Urdu novel Umrao Jaan Ada, the film follows the life of a renowned Lucknow courtesan and poet against the backdrop of 1857 Awadh. Brought to life through Rekha’s unforgettable performance, Khayyam’s timeless music, Shahryar’s evocative poetry, and exquisite production design, Umrao Jaan is both a cinematic classic and a poignant tribute to Awadhi culture.

Nominated for the Grand Prix at the 1953 Cannes Film Festival and for the Academy Award for Best Writing, Story and Screenplay in 1956, Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot (Mr. Hulot’s Holiday, 1953) follows the eccentric Monsieur Hulot as he arrives at a quiet seaside resort for his summer vacation. His good intentions and absent-minded charm set off a chain of misunderstandings and comic mishaps that ripple through the lives of fellow holidaymakers. From tennis matches and canoe rides to dinners at the hotel and leisurely afternoons on the beach, each seemingly ordinary moment becomes an exquisitely staged comic set piece.

No one staged everyday life quite like Jacques Tati.

With Jour de Fête, his first feature, a village fair becomes a playground, a bicycle becomes choreography, and a simple postal round becomes one of the great comedies of postwar French cinema.

An immersive journey through 70 years of images and sounds from Lebanon. Exploring the collective psyche of Beirut, marked by beauty, trauma, joy, and forgetting.

Do You Love Me is a personal journey through Lebanon’s audiovisual memory, composed entirely of archival footage. It is a love letter to Beirut, spanning 70 years of film, TV, home videos, and photography, exploring the Lebanese collective psyche marked by joy and intimacy, destruction and loss. Through the eyes of citizens, filmmakers, and artists, the film reconstructs a fragmented history in a country without a national archive, celebrating creative expression as both resistance, renewal, and a means to preserve memory.

Winner of the Best Screenplay Award at the 1949 Venice Film Festival, Jour de fête was described by The New York Times as « a small comic masterpiece.»

With Jour de fête, Jacques Tati made a dazzling feature debut, introducing the meticulous visual comedy and gentle observation that would define one of cinema’s most influential filmmakers. Set in a sleepy French village during its annual fair, the film follows postman François, whose attempt to emulate the speed and efficiency of the American postal service turns an ordinary mail route into an unforgettable comic adventure.

Presented in a beautifully restored print, Jour de fête is an enduring masterpiece of visual storytelling, playful, inventive, and a testament to Tati’s extraordinary ability to find humor in the rhythms of everyday life.
