Meet Susan!

My mom tells me that I was one of “those” kids. You know the ones; the ones that dance
and sing all the time. Then adulting took over: university, a career, marriage, family.
Music fell to the wayside. By the end of covid, I was searching to find joy again. I found
the Maple Ridge Chorus! There is pure joy in singing surrounded by other singers!
There is power and beauty in music, and we get to share this with others through voice.
Magic!
Yes, I found joy with the chorus. I’ve also found friendships and laughter, and
opportunities to challenge myself. I am currently the Alto Representative and a Member
At Large on the choir’s Board of Directors. I was also the Concert Chair for the choir’s
2024/2025 season. I would never have dreamed of doing these things before joining the
choir.
If you were also one of “those” kids and are looking to find that musical joy again, I
highly recommend the Maple Ridge Chorus. Come share the music with us!

Meet Carolyn!

Carolyn was a member in the early 2000’s leaving in 2006 when life got too hectic with her kids’ activities and work commitments. In 2023 she rejoined the choir and is so happy to be a member again.

In 2024 she took on the role of Member Representative on the Board and has really enjoyed volunteering her time in this role, as well as helping out with other projects as needed, including helping with the treasurer role since January.

Carolyn had this to say about being a part of the Maple Ridge Chorus: “Singing in a choir is such an amazing experience – friendships, laughter, amazing harmonies and that sense of accomplishment when you finally perfect a piece of music can’t be beat!”

Meet Shawna (L) and Jancis (R)

Shawna joined the chorus back in the Fall of 2021, after a few members had encouraged her to do so including her mother, Trudy, who had also been a member some years ago. Shawna had been previously a member of the Maple Ridge Singers for quite a few years and was looking for a new challenge. Singing in general has been her life’s passion since the age of 10. She has sang in church choirs, high school choirs, community theatre, vocal jazz ensembles, at funerals/weddings, in “The Right Hand Band,” and the Womens’ Choir at Trinity Western University in Langley. As her brother Mike puts it, “She has always been a hard one to keep quiet.”

The joy found in singing is personal therapy for her and an enriching part of her life apart from work and family. She joined the board as a Member at large in 2024. Then, after becoming Concert Chair in 2025, she has been able to tap into other creative aspects of her personality to share with the group. There is a sense of fellowship and camaraderie in choir that always leads to new friendships and a rediscovery of one’s self – that is hard to find elsewhere.

She encourages anyone who has been thinking of joining a choir to come on out to a concert or check out a choir practice. Don't waste your talent singing to the radio in the car...You will be so glad you did!

Jancis

I have always loved to sing, and had fun with my high school friends performing for special functions over the last few years. I heard about the Maple Ridge Choral Society from a friend from my ukulele group.
I joined the choir 7 years ago on my birthday, a present to me from myself. I was so surprised that the choir sang “happy birthday” to me, it sounded so wonderful!
I have so enjoyed the practices and concerts over the years, and of course the opportunity to sing in Carnegie Hall with an orchestra was more than I had ever dreamed of!
I am now a member at large with the choir board and my pleasure is to announce the birthdays of any member whose birthday occurs during that week, and to have the choir sing them a fabulous “happy birthday."

Thank you to both for the joy you bring every week!

Meet Thyra! (Pronounced like Tiramisu!)

Thyra joined the choir in 2016 after discovering the group’s booth at the Farmers Market (a common theme!).
After participating in band and choir throughout high school, then continuing her musical studies at Capilano College with hopes of becoming a music therapist, rediscovering the joy of making music after spending five years as a stay‑at‑home mom was incredibly meaningful—and Tuesdays quickly became her favourite day of the week.

Through MRCS, Thyra has formed lasting friendships and enjoyed countless memorable experiences, including the unforgettable opportunity to travel to New York and perform at Carnegie Hall.

She joined the Board of Directors in 2022 as Concert Chair, then became President in 2023, a role she has been honoured to serve in for the past three years.

Thyra encourages anyone looking for a fun community activity to try us out!

Meet Geri!

I have been a member of the choir for 11 years at least. I previously served on the board as the Alto Rep and Vice President. I am the Vice President on the current board. I joined the choir after seeing a booth at the farmers' market in Memorial Peace Park and the rest as they say is history.
I have always enjoyed singing and was in choirs and band in high school. Being part of Maple Ridge Chorus has opened doors to new friendships as well as challenged me musically. One of the highlights was definitely my trip to New York with the choir in November of 2025. I am definitely looking forward to what the future holds for both myself and the choir.
