Southpaws Express a 501c3 New England foster-based transport rescue registered in the state of Rhode Island. All listed dogs are located in New England.

Southpaws Express is a transport based all-breed rescue that has been established in Rhode Island for more than a decade. We are, and prefer to remain, small, pulling only a few dogs at a time. We believe in great ambassador dogs for rescue, happy adopters, and a smooth adoption process. Be it through adoption, volunteerism or education, we welcome you to our family!

Fundraiser time, lol! Southpaws is very proud to have maintained its same, lower ($450) adoption fee for the past ten years. We feel it promotes rescuing dogs and builds trust, but what it also means is that when dogs have unexpected, exceptional costs we need to rattle that ol' tin can ;) And so it is with Shorty. who was someone's pet for years but unfortunately did not receive the best of care, some old leg injury left to heal by itself leaving him habitually hopping around on three legs at quicker gaits (the vets say he is all healed up and it is nothing to worry over), and his teeth are a mess and need care. We have received a quote for that from our friends at Salt Ponds Animal Hospital (attached to this listing), which should run $900-1200. Shorty would certainly appreciate any help you can offer, as it will bring him relief and help to ensure a bright future for him.

Arriving today in Rhode Island from Houston is our beloved chunky monkey DUSTY! A six month old aproximate American Bulldog/Boxer mix, he is silly and responsible all at the same time. Joey has arrived in Rhode Island, is settling in well and is all set to meet and adopt! 4 month old shepherd mix boy is a typical busy, curious puppy who will keep you on you toes, but is learning thirsty, very bright, thrives with direction and wants to please, giving excellent focus. A sweet and cuddly boy besides, he will make an outstanding companion!

This is JOEY! And he is a....well honestly, your guess is as good as ours, lol!....but a Shepherd cross of some kind, maybe with some Lab in there? Whatever sort of Shepherd mix he is, he is very natural in appearance, yet unique and beautiful, and should mature approximately into a large medium in size. Joey is a very sweet fellow who likes everyone, gets along great with his foster's girls (entering teenagehood), other dogs and is very cheerful 24/7. A puppy-ish puppy, he will benefit from puppy playgroups and attending training classes, is sure to make an ideal family pet or will make the perfect hiking buddy for a single person. Awaiting their vet visits this morning are Labor Day pulls out of danger from the Harris County Animal Shelter, Dusty, 6 month old American Bulldog mix, and the 4 month old Lab/German Shepherd natural mutt type pup Joey! Dusty is pure classic AB, the sweetest and most playful character of a dog who also wants to be on patrol all the time to be sure everyone is safe.....plunging into the pool to save his foster from drowning 😂....,while little Joey is the most innocent and happy sprite who loves the kids in the house and just wants to have fun despite nursing an infected neuter surgery site. Both are lovely boys!

This is Sadie, and she will arrive in RI late August ready to go! She has all the cute, but first we had to get her out of her Houston shelter where she showed up as a found stray (tbh not sure if that part is true...maybe someone bought her and had second thoughts and then took her to the shelter on that pretense, people alas do that, for she acts as if she has not had a bad day in her entire life). The shelter had her listed as a Newfoundland mix, and she would please that sensibility, but in life's outlook and behavior she seems like a Lab. She went straight to our best foster and started to learn the ropes of proper puppy behavior while showered with loving guidance, had her initial vet appointment (that is her in the waiting room in the pic), and since then we have been making sure all her boxes are checked to get her northward and ready to adopt. She is bright, learns well. She can be pretty mouthy and has all the Lab traits, the famous and the infamous 😂....and will be a great pup to raise, as long as you know what signing on to raise a puppy means, lol, for she is a puppy-ish puppy. Have a look at Angel's coat coming in, she's cuter than ever and can you believe it?....she is STILL patiently awaiting her forever home! Angel is just a charm and will make someone out there very happy. Somewhere between midage and junior senior, around seven years old, prior to being a stray in Houston she clearly knew life as a loved housepet. She is very companionable without being overbearing, has zero temper with people and is very easy to handle, happy all the time, never moody. Angel lives harmoniously with other dogs, but she has a mind to assert her own place before settling in and would be equally happy as an only pet. Her relationship with people is far more important to her. The cat test went fine though :) She loves her walks, as well as lolling in her dog bed, and not much phases her. Angel is a sweet senior girl we just rescued from the crowded Harris County Animal Shelter in Houston. Our volunteer went to pick up another pup and saw this darling undone and overwhelmed in her kennel in the clattering environment, which just smells of stress, and we made the decision to get her the heck out of there. She is a 7yo maltipoo who has had rough times, but also clearly has been someone's pet, and she was so relieved to get out of the shelter and has been a perfect little darling ever since! Flea infested, spayed and shaved down from excessive matting, she had her initial vet visit for us in Houston (preparing to get here to RI) to learn she is a hot mess, her primary, urgent issues being a light cough which radiographs showed to be bronchial inflammation and an infected spay site as well. Starting out $700 in the hole....ouch!, lol.....we are asking for a little financial support for this darling lady as she continues her journey here to RI to claim her happy forever. Fun video of Buffy, who is a party girl! And still looking for a home. She's a readymade pet who is used to the pet life, adopted by one of our volunteers back in 2018, but unfortunately her personal life has taken some twists and turns and Buffy needs a new home. She's a very spry seven going on eight years old, happy to snooze on the couch all day but up for anything and full of jazz whenever there is an outing in the offing. She had never even been around agility obstacles previously when this video was taken last month! A perfect balance, she is so much fun, very affectionate and a big character. Obviously housebroken, does great in the crate and is super easy to get along with. Best off as an only pet, but she would do fine in an apartment :) Perfect for weekend warriors hoping for a dog who isn't demanding and yet up for adventures. If that is you, she is your girl :)

This is a quick courtesy post for a rescue friend of ours in Houston who sent this lovely boy, Walter, to an adopter in Maine and the adopters immediately wanted to bail....no fault of his at all. He's high energy, typical for a Border Collie mix, but a good boy. People friendly, loves dogs, did ok on his cat test too. His Texas foster even dabbled with him to get a few ribbons. He's still in New England awaiting transport back to Houston, but this is a better place for him, and he will be available regionally until he gets on his transport. Anyone interested in dog sports, he would be a dream for. He also would do well with someone who is up for walking/running a couple miles a day for they surely would find a great companion in him. Thrives with training and is a perfect fit for those who like to train and build adventures with their dog. He is an amazing find!
