16/02/2026

As we reflect on our recent 2026 Firefighters Challenge hosted by Blenheim Volunteer Fire Brigade. This event was one for the record books, with competitors coming from far and wide to participate in our event and it was by far the biggest event that we have held so far in the Nelson/Marlborough District. We would like to extend a huge thank you to a few of the supporter/sponsors that were able to make this event possible:

Blenheim Volunteer Fire Brigade
Blenheim Bandits
Marlborough Scaffolding Ltd
Robinson Construction Ltd
Rapid Relief Team New Zealand
Canterbury Provincial Fire Brigades Association (CPFBA)
Fire and Emergency NZ
Marlborough District Council
-Plus, a whole lot more.

Please visit https://nmpfba.org.nz/resources/results/ for event results and timings,

Finally, just a big thank you to everyone that supported and participated in this event! We hope to see you back next year for 2027

The Nelson Marlborough Provincial Fire Brigades Association, in conjunction with the Blenheim Volunteer Fire Brigade and proudly supported by our mates at Robinson Construction Group, are hosting the 2026 Provincial Firefighter Challenge right here in Blenheim!

Have a chat with your brigade and get a team together — lads, lasses, or co-ed — all fitness levels welcome.

Get amongst the action! It’s a fun-filled day where camaraderie is key, and there’ll be plenty of it on display.

Word around town is the white helmets are forming a team… and rumour has it they’re pretty quick!

Let’s make this a challenge to remember!

What a great event hosted by Seddon Vollunteer Fire Brigade. Organized by the Challenge Team and everyone enjoyed the at one point very fast paced scenic ride.

Sadly, the weather didn’t play the game a kept the view from the top shrouded by mist. An early morning to assemble at the bottom for a briefing before we were shuttled to the top.

Many thanks to Andy and his team Marlborough Sounds Adventure Co, for the loan of their trailer, it made getting the 15 bikes to the top a breeze.

Another quick brief at the top and first poker card handed out and we were off to collect the other 3 along the way with e 5th at the bottom at the finish line.

Few stats for those that are interested.

Altimarloch Summit sits at 1693 Meters the Finish line was 444 meters.

The race winner was Iwan Jones from Picton Volunteer Fire Brigade with a time of 13 minutes 32 seconds; he reached a top speed of 73Kmh over the 10.55 Km distance.

Second place was Tobias McGill with a time of 15 minutes 20 seconds.

Third was Brodie Mac Donald with a time of 18 minutes 40 Seconds.

The Poker Run hand winner was Harrison Renner who was placed 8th to finish, this was even after having flat tyre and convincing his mum Michelle to give him her bike.

Great day had by all and a good first Mountain bike event held in the Marlbroough Region for the Provincial FBA.

A parliament petition has been put together by one of our members, from the Queenstown Volunteer Fire Brigade, to change the ACC legislation to give volunteer firefighters the same ACC coverage and benefits as their paid colleagues.

We are proudly supporting our members’ initiative, as it has strong alignment with the UFBA’s Strategic Priority on our Fairness and Equity Campaign to get volunteer firefighters more coverage under ACC.

Here is the link to the petition: https://petitions.parliament.nz/5872f736-ed2f-443c-f919-08dd5b668762 (closes 30 April 2025)

Please show your support by signing the petition and share this through your networks, on your brigades' social media and with your friends, families, and colleagues.

The UFBA will continue to advocate at a national political level, but as one of the 12,000 volunteer firefighters, it is you who can drive this change from the ground up. The aim is that our combined efforts mean we will meet in the middle on the doorstep of the decision-makers.

More information on the petition and background details on the ACC issue can be found on our website - https://www.ufba.org.nz/news/members-petition-change-acc-legislation

A massive congratulations to SFF Kevin “Blackie” Black, he has accumulated 50 years service with FENZ/NZ fire service today.
Blackie has served with Tākaka, Karamea, Blenheim, New Brighton, Wellington airport, Woodbourne airport Christchurch airport and back to Woodbourne.
Blackie is a past president of the Nelson Marlborough Fire Brigade Association. A honorary life member of the Provincial and the Picton Brigade.
He has also served seven years on the UFBA technical panel.

It has been a massive honour to have him in our brigade, as you can imagine the accumulated wealth of knowledge that Blackie has gathered is immense, those who have asked have found that he is very forthcoming with imparting as much of that knowledge as you are capable of absorbing.

Thanks Blackie, you’re a genuine good bastard.
