We recently added a light kit to a power chair for an individual who has had the frightening experience of being hit by a car. The lights will help him be more visible to drivers and give him greater confidence and peace of mind while out in the community.

At UATP, we love finding practical solutions that help people feel safer, more independent, and confident in their everyday lives.

Robert from UATP/SLC recently worked with a consumer whose power chair was no longer giving her the support she needed. When a wheelchair doesn't fit properly, it can become uncomfortable and even put extra stress on the frame over time.
To find the best solution, Robert let her borrow a demo chair for a week so she could try it in her everyday routine. After hearing what worked well and what didn’t, he adjusted the setup with a stronger base and better ground clearance. Now she can get over curbs more easily and enjoy spending time outside again.
This is a great example of how trying equipment before making a decision helps ensures it meets a person’s needs and supports their independence. Great job, Robert!

Wes Smith is the Assistive Technology Coordinator for the Utah Assistive Technology Program (UATP) office over in Vernal, Utah in the Uintah Basin. Wes is looking for volunteers in the Vernal/Uintah Basin area to come help him work with assistive technology and serve the community.
