On this day of Women's History Month, we are remembering Mary Kenneth Keller!

Sister Mary Kenneth Keller (December 17, 1913 - January 10, 1985) was an American Roman Catholic religious sister, educator, and the first* person to earn a Ph.D. in the United States. She entered the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1932 and took her vows with them in 1940. She later completed her bachelor’s in Mathematics in 1943 and her M.S. in Mathematics and Physics in 1953 from Depaul University in Chicago! She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1964. Her dissertation was Inductive Inference on Computer Generated Patterns, focused on algorithms that performed analytic differentiation on algebraic expression. Throughout her life, she worked at many other institutions and the National Science Foundation. Keller founded the computer science department at Clarke College in Iowa, and was the director for 20 years. She was a huge advocate for women in computing and computing in education, and wrote four books on this.

*There was one other doctorate degree awarded on that day

Today in Women's History Month, we are celebrating Malala Yousafzai!

Malala Yousafzai (July 12, 1997 - ) is a Pakistani activist for female education and the youngest Nobel Prize laureate. She is known for advocating for the education rights of women and children, especially in her native home in Pakistan. Her father ran a chain of schools in her region, and while the local Taliban had banned girls from attending school, she still attended and spoke out publicly against the rule. In October 2012, on her way home from school, a masked gunman boarded her bus and shot her in the head. She was transferred to a hospital in the UK and this later sparked an international outpouring of support for her and her cause. She has become a prominent activist for the right to education and founded the Malala Fund, a nonprofit. In 2014 she was the co-recipient of the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize, along with Kailash Satyarthi. At 17, she was the youngest ever laureate. She is currently studying for her bachelor’s at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford.
