We do this work because Black families deserve more than survival. They deserve care that protects life from the very beginning.

Birth weight is one of the earliest indicators of a child’s lifelong health. It is shaped by the systems Black birthing people navigate, the care they receive, and whether their voices are honored.

NBCDI’s Essential Outcome #1 commits us to ensuring every Black child is born at a healthy weight. That means addressing racism in maternal healthcare, centering lived experience, and building solutions alongside Black communities.

We are not waiting for change. We are building it.

It is no coincidence that Florida’s Literacy Week theme this year was “Read, White & Blue”; an intentional doubling down on a climate of dog whistle American patriotism while terrorizing marginalized communities.

BCDI-FTL did what we always do! We showed up and provided literature that our young people can see themselves in regardless of what is happening politically.

Afrofuturist Term of the Week

Adultification Bias
Adultification bias refers to the discriminatory perception of Black children being more likely to be seen as older than their age than other children of the same age, therefore requiring less nurturing and protection.
