In light of the recent news from the Freedom Flotilla and the Global Convoy to break the siege, this excerpt from Mohammed el-Kurd’s most recent book Perfect Victims and the Politics of Appeal seems especially prescient.

We want to thank everyone who attended last night's film screening of Little Palestine: Diary of a Siege. We are so happy to confirm that we were able to raise $557.00 for the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund (PCRF) through our ongoing donations on Instagram, event link, & cash donations. All cash donations provided to us throughout the evening has been donated to the PCRF through the event donation link this morning. We appreciate everyone's participation and we were overwhelmed the positive response to the event discussion.

In closing, we want to share the last words that were spoken at the event:
"The rallying cry that We are all Palestinians must abandon the metaphor and manifest materially. Meaning, all of us—Palestinians or otherwise—must embody the Palestinian condition, the condition of resistance and refusal, in the lives we lead and the company we keep. Meaning we reject our complicity in this bloodshed and our inertia when confronted with all of that blood. Meaning Gaza cannot stand alone in sacrifice [...] Collective struggle seems impossible in a hyper-capitalist, hyper-surveilled world. Unscrupulous logic tells us political discipline is an ineffective weapon, that our efforts are in vain. And personal sacrifices might feel futile, because they crush the doer while barely denting the status quo.
But this is not about their status quo. It is about ours. It is about our relationship with ourselves and our communities. The few moments of reflection before drifting to sleep, the brief encounter with the mirror in the morning, when we ask ourselves: What are the pretenses that absolve us from participating in history? Here we are, on different planets, in different realities." Mohammed el-Kurd, Palestinian writer and poet

"The siege imposed two kinds of change, social change involving people’s relations with one another, and psychological change involving a person’s relation to their self. On the level of the social, the change was radical, bringing out the harshest aspects of the human soul, the dark and evil and the noblest and kindest, all at once."

"As the siege tightened, I wrote: “I see no end to the siege beyond my own death, and no end to my death beyond the siege.” What I meant was that I couldn’t conceive of a meaning for life outside that place, beyond the siege. And even if I somehow managed to make it out, something inside me will remain besieged, tied to memories that refuse to be forgotten."

"Under siege, people no longer refer to the usual greetings for morning or evening, instead they ask: “What did you eat today?” It no longer matters whether it’s Friday or Saturday. People’s movements are connected to finding food, and time is linked to food. Time under siege is long and morbid. The day does not always end. But if you find food, then time accelerates and the day concludes."
