Thank you to the tireless efforts of Patriot Eric Rudberg, Washington DC will be rolling out Purple Heart License Plates on August 1, 2026.

In 2025, Eric learned that the DC DMV had a "Disabled American Veteran" license plate (ie tag) but they did not have a “Purple Heart” plate. He was informed that a “Purple Heart recipient” was considered the same as a "Disabled American Veteran.” Eric single-handedly took the initiative to work with DC city council members' offices to create adoption of B26-0135, the “Purple Heart License Plate Amendment Act of 2025.”

We are grateful to Eric for championing our combat wounded veterans and positively spreading the message that heroes walk (and drive!) amongst us in our community.

The Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act (signed into law in 2017), designates March 29 as National Vietnam War Veterans Day. This date was chosen because the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV) was disbanded and the last U.S. combat troops left the Republic of Vietnam on March 29, 1973.

The United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration honors all United States veterans who served in the U.S. Armed Forces from 1955 to 1975 with a special commemorative pin. As a division of the Virginia Department of Veterans Services, the Virginia War Memorial is honored to be able to present these commemorative pins to any Vietnam veteran that visits us. We welcome and look forward to presenting our Vietnam War veterans these pins.

To learn more about the Vietnam War you can go to: https://vawarmemorial.org/learn/resources/vietnam/ for links to our “Virginians At War” films, previously recorded livestreams as well as resources and activities.

Welcome Home and Thank You to our Vietnam Veterans as well as all of our other veterans - we are a grateful nation.

We would like to thank the chapter members, family, and friends who joined us on February 21 for our monthly meeting. The meeting covered Washington DC's efforts to implement specialty license plates for Purple Heart recipients, potential community outreach initiatives, and upcoming events in support of our local American Legion Post 176.

Additionally, we would like to bring to your attention that 16 Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles locations have designated Purple Heart parking spots. We invite you to take a photo of yourself at one of these locations.
