BikeTown Africa Since 2006 BikeTown Africa has delivered over 4000 bikes to students and healhcare workers in Africa

WHAT WE DO
BikeTown Africa works with local NGO's and healthcare clinics to provide new bicycles to HIV/AIDS workers in their fight against HIV/AIDS and infectious diseases. Since 2006, we've delivered almost 3000 bikes to groups fighting HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan African countries such as Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, Senegal, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Malawi, Lesotho, Rwanda and others.

In most projects the healthcare workers are using these bikes to distribute anti-retroviral drugs and provide home-based care to people infected with HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and other illnesses. In Rwandan the bicycles were given to orphans of the genocide

The healthcare workers are also disseminating information about how people can protect themselves from HIV and on the importance of being tested for the virus. Doing this work on foot, workers in remote areas can sometimes see only one or two people in each day, but with bicycles that number could rise to as many as five visits per day or they are able to spend more time with each patient; who may only interact with one or two people in a week. We've also provided bicycles to orphanages for use by the children, many of whom became orphans due to losing their parents to AIDS. THE PARTNERS
We work very closely with Bristol-Myers Squibb’s SECURE THE FUTURE Foundation; ia $150 million corporate commitment to fighting HIV and AIDS in Africa. SECURE THE FUTURE has established a number of HIV and AIDS treatment programs throughout sub-Saharan Africa.

via WhatsApp, we received this short video from one of the healthcare workers at the Khanda Clinic. A nice note of thanks, and validation of the value that a bicycle, courtesy of Bike Town Africa donors, brings to his work with patients.

A big thank you to all of our Bike Town Africa supporters from some of the Malawi students who also helped with the bike building. Without naming names to protect the innocent (and the guilty, you know who you are), THANK YOU!: JohnnyScissorsWendyHMarkyMarkDianeLLighthousemarieTheMartinizerGuitarMurrayRCoupleofrosesMigueldonteatswazifishTHEpatriotPvAanonymousNosneakersPegJimBenjNatHabBenBMissCarolGigiBEvebcMarybethssCzachyLindaGMarisaMSHPVBSMaddoKingslandSternHollyLPetenJoLexnCathBetsySPothastCoachwebDaveLDanLBMSVeronaBSTChiHeigtsRotarySHPandKW

Hey we're on TV! Fox 5 New York got a hold of us in Malawi. We apologize that our spokesmodel was unavailable so they had to settle for a much less tv-friendly face. The link is here:

'BikeTown Africa,' a nonprofit organization, delivered more than 200 bikes to rural Africa to provide life-saving and everyday transportation means. FOX 5 NY's Dan Bowens explains their work and talks to the founder of the organization.

One Heart Secondary School has a very involved Parent Association. Extremely happy that their children will get bicycles and have even arranged for our local mechanics to visit the school weekly to help maintain the bikes. A bike is invaluable to local Malawians, and they want to ensure they're looked after. Here are the heads of the Parents Association, the "Concerned Mothers," and the school Headmaster.

For this most recent Bike Town Africa event, we hired 2 local bike mechanics to go over each bike (after Jack, Judy and I did our rudimentary best at bike fixing). They were extremely diligent with each bike (literally spoke by spoke) and we rewarded them by paying them what they might earn in 2 1/2 months in just the 3 days. We also gave them each a brand new bike, wrench sets and floor pump.
