BikeTown Africa Since 2006 BikeTown Africa has delivered over 6000 bikes to students and healhcare workers in Africa

WHAT WE DO
BikeTown Africa works with local NGO's and healthcare clinics to provide new bicycles to HIV/AIDS workers in their fight against HIV/AIDS and infectious diseases. Since 2006, we've delivered almost 3000 bikes to groups fighting HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan African countries such as Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, Senegal, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Malawi, Lesotho, Rwanda and others.

In most projects the healthcare workers are using these bikes to distribute anti-retroviral drugs and provide home-based care to people infected with HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and other illnesses. In Rwandan the bicycles were given to orphans of the genocide

The healthcare workers are also disseminating information about how people can protect themselves from HIV and on the importance of being tested for the virus. Doing this work on foot, workers in remote areas can sometimes see only one or two people in each day, but with bicycles that number could rise to as many as five visits per day or they are able to spend more time with each patient; who may only interact with one or two people in a week. We've also provided bicycles to orphanages for use by the children, many of whom became orphans due to losing their parents to AIDS. THE PARTNERS
We work very closely with Bristol-Myers Squibb’s SECURE THE FUTURE Foundation; ia $150 million corporate commitment to fighting HIV and AIDS in Africa. SECURE THE FUTURE has established a number of HIV and AIDS treatment programs throughout sub-Saharan Africa.

A HEARTFELT THANK YOU TO OUR DONORS!

Through your very generous donations, you were directly responsible for the purchase of 253 bicycles for students and healthcare workers. Now health care workers will have a reliable way to get to work, to be able to visit their patients faster, and spend more time with them; students will get to school on time, less tired, and more able to concentrate on their studies.

During every trip we make to Africa to provide bicycles to school children or healthcare workers, we're reminded by the recipients of how valuable a bicycle is to them, how much it improves their lives, and how grateful (and surprised!) they are that you’ve chosen them for this truly wonderful gift.

As Americans, it seems like such a simple machine, but it never fails to surprise us how much they value a new bicycle.

Again, thank you very much for your generosity; 100% OF YOUR DONATION went to the purchase of new bicycles and you've directly changed and improved the lives of students and healthcare workers in rural Malawi.

That's a wrap on our most recent 2026 trip to the rural villages of Malawi. Thanks to our incredibly generous donors, we were able to build and give away 253 new bicycles to ALL the healthcare workers at the clinics in the villages of Makwapala (72 bikes), Naisi (65 bikes) and Likangala (66 bikes). In addition we gave 50 new bikes to the One Heart Secondary School for incoming freshman who would otherwise be walking great distances to/from school. Thanks again to all our donors, 100% of any/all donations go to purchase new bicycles. A new bicycle truly changes a life, and you've all directly changed the lives of so many for 20 YEARS running! ZIKOMO!!

July 6 was Malawi Independence Day, so we had a forced day off from bike building. We stumbled upon the Zomba golf course (really?!) so we had to give it a try...they call "browns" (instead of greens, since they're basically sand/dirt) and the fairways are "roughs" and the roughs are "roughers"....no water hazards, but watch out for all the monkeys!

This is Vice Principal Noto at the One Heart School. We asked him if saw any impact of the bikes on student performance. He gave us some statistic: the average passing rate of seniors on Malawi‘s national exams was around 55-60%. Just a few years ago (before the bikes) One Heart was around 65-70%. We started providing bikes to One Heart in 2023. In 2025 One Hearts’s National Exam passing rate was an incredible 95%! (with more than 30 students being accepted to University s a typical school having 5-10 at best). Mr. Noto noted that its more correlation rather than causation, but Bike Town Africa can be proud the bikes made a definite impact on the student’ performance.

After providing close to 300 bikes over the past few years to One Heart Secondary School, we‘re giving 50 more bikes this year for incoming freshman who live furthest from school. We had to operate stealthily as many students were taking national exams. And while exams were going on, those students not taking exams had class outside as there aren’t enough desks or classrooms for all.

During this trip we did a follow up with a prior bike recipient, Weston, the son of an onion farmer. Weston received a bike in 2024 as a student at the One Heart Secondary School. Weston was walking more than 6 miles each way to/from school before receiving his bicycle from Bike Town Africa. With the help of bicycle, Weston was able to reach school every day, on time and less tired. He graduated second in his class, passed with top scores on all the National exams, and has been accepted into University where he plans to study infectious vectors. A very nice young man, Weston expressed his thanks and gratitude to Bike Town Africa. We’re so happy in his success and wish him luck at University.

On the (very bumpy) road to the Makwapala clinic, we happened upon our bike mechanic John at his roadside shop. We told him where we were headed, only 1k away, and that he just got 72 new potential customers at the clinic. We also told the clinic workers where to go for any bike maintenance needs.

Yesterday we handed over 72 new bicycles to EVERY worker at the Makwapala Heath Care Clinic in rural Zomba. Everyone was incredibly grateful for the gift, citing how helpful it will be to get to/from work, and will help the patient facing workers reach more patients and spend more time with them. Thank you to all the generous Bike Town Africa donors!
