Lower Manhattan's student population was ordered back to the area by our government after 9/11 without disclosure of the risks we would face. At the time, many of us returned, entrance to our school buildings required filing through checkpoints manned by armed police and National Guardsmen, fires were still burning at the World Trade Center site, and debris was being taken to the landfill by way o

f a barge located directly outside our a large number of school buildings. Although the Board of Education continually assured us of the safety of the air at our school, the smell of smoke was suffocating for months. We have no way of knowing what health effects will or have already emerged because of the lack of monitoring. Even for those of us with minor conditions, however, health coverage gets more expensive every day and is difficult to obtain on a starting salary. As victims of 9/11, and, especially, victims of our government’s misinformation campaign, we served as "draftees" in the media campaign to reassure the American people. In exchange, we deserve our government’s protection, and to that end, we deserve monitoring and treatment for any and all 9/11-related conditions.

📸 Throwback to 2015, when StuyHealth members went to Capitol Hill alongside other first responders and survivor advocates to secure funding for the WTC Health Program, which provides free medical and mental health care to thousands of students, residents, and workers exposed to 9/11 toxins. Advocates have returned many times since (a group was even there this week)!

StuyHealth members were still teenagers when we were exposed. If you were downtown during or after 9/11 — especially if you were a student — you may qualify for care too.

We've been advocating for 9/11 survivors since 2006.

🗓️ For nearly two decades, we’ve pushed for:
✔️ expanded survivor access to the WTC Health Program
✔️ better research on student and resident exposures
✔️ long-term support for illnesses that take years to show up

Thousands of survivors were children or teens on 9/11. Many are now living with health issues related to the WTC clean-up — and still navigating what it means to get care.

💬 This work isn’t new for us. It’s personal. It’s ongoing. And we’re still here.

The WTC Health Program was created to give long-term care to people exposed to the trauma and toxins of 9/11 — not just in the days that followed, but for decades to come.

📌 It offers no-cost medical care
📌 It acknowledges delayed onset of illness
📌 It recognizes both the physical and emotional toll of the attacks
📌 It includes responders and survivors

Imagine applying that model post-COVID. For essential workers. For residents in high-risk neighborhoods. For communities still dealing with environmental injustice today. We don’t need to wait for another disaster to act like public health matters.

The WTC Health Program isn’t just a safety net — it’s a blueprint.

In the weeks after 9/11, government officials claimed the air downtown was safe to breathe.
But many students, workers, and residents were already coughing, wheezing, or having trouble sleeping.

News stories from that time — like this one — show the early warning signs:
💨 lingering dust
😷 burning throats
🏫 schools reopening just blocks from Ground Zero

We now know the air wasn’t safe.
Thousands exposed downtown have developed chronic health conditions.

If you were a student south of Houston Street in 2001–2002, you may qualify for no-cost care through the WTC Health Program.
