🚨𝑪𝑨𝑳𝑳 𝑻𝑶 𝑨𝑪𝑻𝑰𝑶𝑵!!🚨

Once again, Darebin Council are holding a meeting on Tues 24 March to propose a new flag policy and remove the Palestinian Flag.

With the genocide ongoing despite a sham ‘ceasefire’, and with Israel and the USA now launching full scale attacks in Iran and Lebanon, in addition to the recent invitation by the government of war criminal Herzog to visit and the myriad of repressive crackdowns on showing solidarity with Palestine -
𝒘𝒆 𝒄𝒂𝒏𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒐𝒘 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒉𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒆𝒏!!

The new flag policy proposal gives the UNELECTED CEO too much power to decide which flag flies and when, with little community input. Only that they ‘may’ consult with the Mayor or councillors.

Furthermore, the CEO has proposed that the council will only fly international flags AS DIRECTED BY THE COMMONWEALTH GOVERNMENT. And considering they just invited a war criminal into the country doesn’t inspire confidence!
Besides this, a municipal council is there to represent the views of locals and not their party policies. Relying on orders from the Federal Government of the day, gives excessive power to the major party in power and disregards the needs and opinions of local residents.

12/02/2026

At the Special Meeting of Darebin Council on Tuesday the 10th of February, the motion to lower the Palestinian flag and replace it with the ‘peace flag’ was withdrawn, and an alternate motion passed in its place. As a result, for now, the Palestinian flag will continue to fly above Preston City Hall. In light of the wording of the original motion, which disgracefully linked the Palestinian flag to the antisemitic massacre in Bondi late last year, this is a small win for the community and the Palestinian solidarity movement, although there is still no guarantee the Palestinian flag will continue to fly beyond the end of next month, despite the ongoing genocide.

The question of the Palestinian flag above Preston City Hall will be revisited as part of a Council discussion around the broader flag policy “no later than the end of March 2026”. Looking at Council meeting dates, this is likely to be at the March 24th meeting. Unlike yesterday’s Special Meeting, this Council meeting will most likely allow for submissions, questions and petitions from the public; more details to come as we get closer to the date. Thank you to community members who contacted Councillors regarding the Palestinian flag and ongoing genocide. A number of the Councillors spoke at the meeting not just of the volume of communications they received, but of their own opposition to the ongoing genocide and their support for the Palestinian people.

The zionist entity – whose president is visiting on a diplomatic trip as we speak – continues to slaughter, displace, imprison and oppress Palestinians. Until the genocide ends, the occupation falls and all Palestinians are afforded the right of return to a free and unified homeland, the flag should not be lowered.

Thanks to the community once again for your tireless efforts in this and many other arenas.

REMINDER - This is happening TOMORROW, contact Council ASAP!

🚨 Call to Action 🚨
Darebin Council are holding a meeting on the 10th of February, again seeking to replace the Palestinian Flag with the so-called ‘Peace Flag’. With the genocide ongoing despite the sham ceasefire and with president of the zionist entity Isaac Herzog currently visiting so-called Australia, this cannot be allowed to happen. Contact Councillors and mayor Emily Dimitriadis to demand that the Palestinian flag remains flying at Preston City Hall. Further details on the situation can be found in slides above ⬆️. Councillors’ emails and phone numbers, along with an example email and meeting agenda, are on our Linktree via link in bio or QR code. Call and email your councillors now!

Suggested responses to the 𝗗𝗥𝗔𝗙𝗧 𝗙𝗟𝗔𝗚 𝗣𝗢𝗟𝗜𝗖𝗬 (also see the examples in the post)

• NO

Why? The Days of Observance gives the UNELECTED CEO complete discretionary power to determine the final list of Days of Observance, undermining the democratic processes of Council.

Q3 𝑫𝒐 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒂𝒈𝒓𝒆𝒆 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒆𝒅 𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒚-𝒏𝒐𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒇𝒍𝒂𝒈𝒔 𝒂𝒔 𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒅 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒅𝒓𝒂𝒇𝒕 𝒑𝒐𝒍𝒊𝒄𝒚?

• NO

Why? The policy gives the CEO unvetted control and simply “may” consult the elected Mayor & councillors if the CEO chooses to. Undermining democratic processes of council.

14/12/2025

This coming Monday the 15th of December, Darebin Council were scheduled to discuss and endorse a new ‘flag policy’ at their meeting. As part of the policy, they were planning to remove the Palestinian flag that has been flying over Preston City Hall since the December 18th, 2023 resolution.

Despite the ceasefire being a sham and the slaughter, displacement and land theft continuing, Council were planning to take down the flag “prior to the end of February 2026”, with community consultation to come only after the decision had been made.

It should also be noted that this proposal came from the (unelected) CEO.

Thanks to the mobilisation of community in Darebin, in the form of calls & emails to Councillors and community/religious and activist groups, emails, and a planned rally, Council have backed down.

The Palestinian flag will – for now – continue to fly above Preston City Hall. Well done Darebin & everyone involved! The flag is just one small part of the struggle - keep fighting to end the genocide, end the occupation, and free Palestine from the river to the sea 🇵🇸
