Day of the African Child – 16 June
“Every Child Deserves the Right to Learn, Thrive and Dream.”

Today, we join millions across Africa in commemorating the Day of the African Child, honouring the brave school children of Soweto Uprising who lost their lives on 16 June 1976 while peacefully demanding access to quality education and the right to be taught in their own language.

Their courage reminds us that education is not a privilege—it is a fundamental right.

What We Stand For

At the Maureen Terera Foundation, we believe that every child, regardless of disability, poverty, gender, or where they live, deserves access to quality education and the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Our Message Today

"The struggle of the children of Soweto was not only for themselves—it was for future generations of African children. Today, we honour their sacrifice by continuing the fight for accessible, inclusive, and quality education for every child."

Warmest congratulations to Martha Musonza Holman MBE on being awarded an MBE in the King's Birthday Honours for services to Community Development in Zimbabwe and UK–Zimbabwe relations through Love Zimbabwe.

This recognition is so richly deserved. Aunty Martha was a dear friend of my late mother, Maureen Terera, and one of the people whose example of service, compassion, and commitment to community inspired the work we do today through the Maureen Terera Foundation.

Your exceptional leadership, dedication, and lasting impact have transformed lives and created opportunities for so many people in both Zimbabwe and the United Kingdom. Thank you for showing us what can be achieved when we lead with love, humility, and a genuine desire to serve others.

Today, we celebrate not only this remarkable achievement but also the countless lives you have touched along the way.

From all of us at the Maureen Terera Foundation, congratulations, Aunty Martha. We are incredibly proud of you and grateful for your inspiration. ❤️🎉

We’ve been supporting children with disabilities in Binga since 2020.

In 2024, I had the privilege of meeting some of them including Sikhumbuzo.

He was born with no arms, but that hasn’t stopped him from wanting an education. He writes using his feet and shows a level of determination that is honestly humbling.

But the reality is determination alone isn’t enough.

Many children like him struggle to access education because of distance, lack of support, and resources.

Through the Maureen Terera Foundation, we support children with disabilities with school fees, food, and essentials so they can stay in school.

If you feel led to support, even £5 makes a real difference 💛
Message me if you’d like to give or find out more.

The Maureen Terera Foundation would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Rare Diseases & Disabilities Africa Foundation for leading such a powerful commemoration this past weekend. A day dedicated to raising awareness for rare diseases and disabilities. It was an honor to stand beside you as a supporting partner on this vital mission.
We also want to share our appreciation for:
The Deputy Mayor for joining us and showing such dedicated leadership.
Our fellow partners at Nozizwe Mother Of Nations Trust for their commitment to community support. A big thank you to our other partner organisations who are dedicated to advocacy and community support.
The 150+ attendees whose presence turned this gathering into a true movement of solidarity.
By coming together, we are breaking the silence, ending the stigma, and ensuring families living with rare diseases and disabilities are seen and heard.
Thank you, Tinotenda Tinntinn Mudarikwa for your incredible leadership. We look forward to many more collaborations! 🤝
