Happy World Book Day! Every book read opens a world of possibilities and opportunities for a child. Many Kansas Optimist clubs support reading through projects such donations of books and dictionaries to students and class reading programs. Recent guests at a meeting of the Manhattan Optimist Club were members of the high school student robotics TEAM 5968, the Little Apple Cyborgs Team. The team has been successful in many competitions including winning the Central Missouri Regional and finishing a strong 7th place in the Kansas City Regional. The group will compete in their 2nd World Competition on April 28 in Houston. The robotic team designs, builds, and programs a robot from scratch every year in only six weeks.

This week the Manhattan Optimist Club recognized Mary Brishton, their Manhattan High School Student of the Month. Mary is on the MHS swim and dive team, and belongs to SADD, Spanish Club, National Honor Club, and other organizations. She volunteers at the Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan, and this fall she plans to attend pharmacy school at the University of Kansas.

Don’t forget to register for the Kansas District Optimist 3rd Quarter District Meeting! The deadline is this Saturday, April 18, and you don’t want to miss this meeting! It will be held in Olathe on Saturday, April 25 and will include the Kansas District Oratorical Contest and a fun Optimist Trivia Contest. Our special guest will be Middle
America Region Vice President Liz Christman. There is no cost for the meeting, but you need to register so we have a correct count for lunch. You can register online at ksoptimist.org or by returning the registration form (also on the website) to the District Treasurer. See you there!
