With warm weather forecast, a reminder of the very real dangers of open water. Cold water shock affects even competent swimmers — and it can be fatal. Please stay away from open water, and follow the safety advice from Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue below.
This Drowning Prevention Week, crews form Rushden Fire Station have been speaking to people at the local swimming pool about water safety and have also been supporting the trainee lifeguards.
Remember as the weather warms up, keep yourself and others safe in and around water. Jumping into water isn’t just a quick cool‑down, it can be life-threatening in seconds. It doesn't matter how good you are at swimming; cold water shock can cause you to get into difficulties and drown.
If you spot someone in difficulty, remember CALL - FLOAT - THROW
✅ CALL
- Dial 999 and ask for Fire & Rescue Service
- Shout to get attention from others nearby
- Keep eyes on the person in the water at all times
✅ FLOAT
- Encourage the person to float
- Ask them to stay calm and control their breathing
✅ THROW
- Throw something to help – don’t go in
- Use anything that floats (Lifebuoy, throw line, bag, bottle or football)
