Celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is important because it honors a leader whose work helped transform the United States and continues to shape its values today.

First, Dr. King’s life reminds us of the power of nonviolence, courage, and moral leadership. Through peaceful protest, he challenged injustice and showed that lasting change can be achieved without hatred or revenge.

Second, the holiday encourages reflection on civil rights and equality. It reminds us of the struggles faced by African Americans and others, and highlights how far society has come—while also acknowledging that work toward justice and fairness is not finished.

Third, Dr. King Day promotes service to others. It is often called a “day on, not a day off,” encouraging people to volunteer, support their communities, and live out Dr. King’s belief that everyone can serve and make a difference.

Finally, celebrating this day helps educate younger generations. It keeps Dr. King’s message alive and inspires people of all backgrounds to stand up for dignity, respect, and human rights.

In honoring Dr. King, we honor the ideals of equality, compassion, and unity that strengthen democracy and society as a whole.

The 5th day of Kwanzaa (celebrated on December 30) is special because it honors the principle of Nia, which means Purpose.

Nia focuses on:

Having a sense of purpose in life

Restoring and strengthening African and African American cultural identity

Common activities:

Group discussions about goals and responsibility

Sharing stories about leaders or ancestors who lived with purpose

Encouraging young people to think about their future roles in the community

Purpose (Nia) means:

Knowing why you matter

Using your skills to help your family and community

Working to make life better for others, not just yourself

On this day, people think about questions like:

What am I good at?

How can I use that to help others?

What kind of person do I want to become?

During the celebration:

A red candle is lit on the Kinara (the candle holder)

Families talk, share stories, and encourage each other to set goals

In simple terms, the 5th day of Kwanzaa reminds people to live with meaning and responsibility and to help build a strong community.

Today, we celebrate Day 4 of Kwanzaa,
Ujamaa, cooperative economics.

Ujamaa reminds us that when we support one another, we grow stronger together. By sharing our skills, resources, and time, we help our families and communities succeed. Today is a reminder that teamwork and unity can build a better future for everyone.
