The Wildlife and Environmental Society of Malawi (WESM) was honoured to participate in the launch of Malawi’s National State of Environment and Outlook Report (NSEOR 2026) held in Lilongwe today during the joint commemoration of World Environment Day (WED) and the International Day for Biological Diversity(IDB).

The national event was presided over by the Minister of Natural Resources, Honourable Patricia Wiskes, MP, and brought together key stakeholders from government, academia, the private sector, civil society, development partners, and the youth under the theme: "Acting Locally for Global Impact."

The report provides critical insights into the state of Malawi’s environment, highlighting growing pressures on forests, land, water resources, and biodiversity. Its findings underscore the urgent need for evidence-based policies, sustainable resource management, and collective action to build resilience to climate change and safeguard the country’s natural heritage.

World Environment Day and the International Day for Biological Diversity are important global observances that remind us of our shared responsibility to protect the environment and conserve biodiversity. They highlight the vital role that healthy ecosystems play in supporting livelihoods, food security, climate resilience, and sustainable development.

As Malawi advances its development aspirations under Vision 2063, protecting our natural resources must remain a national priority. The future of our people, economy, and environment depends on the actions we take today.

Protecting Malawi’s natural heritage is a shared responsibility.

Is your junk drawer worth more than you think?

Most of us see old phones, computers, tangled cables and other obsolete electronic gadgets as waste yet they can provide an opportunity to earn incentives and support livelihoods when handled responsibly.

Join us at the Lilongwe Nature Sanctuary as we explore how proper e-waste management supports a circular economy, reduces environmental harm, and helps safeguard Malawi’s wildlife from toxic risks.

We’ll also discuss how individuals and organizations can responsibly dispose of e-waste, with collection systems that offer monetary incentives while prioritizing environmental impact.

The WESM Blantyre branch distributed shoes to community scouts who are committed to protecting Michiru Mountain Conservation Area from illegal activities. These shoes were donated by Friends of Blantyre WESM in the UK and will be critical to the front-line work performed by the scouts, keeping Michiru a safe-haven for wildlife and for recreation.

Thank you to the Scotland Malawi Partnership and their members for helping make this happen. Zikomo kwambiri.
