It would be fantastic to see more marine reserves on Tasmania’s east coast. Please share and sign if you agree with this petition. Thank you! 🐠🐟🐡

‘The electors of Lyons and the Friends of Waubs Bay draws to the attention of the House the need to protect Waubs Bay, Bicheno, so that marine life can thrive naturally, and the bay's biodiversity can be safeguarded for future generations. Protecting Waubs Bay area will help conserve marine species, allowing natural populations to flourish undisturbed, increase in abundance and ultimately spill over into other parts of the bay.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to call on the Government to zone the area as a marine sanctuary to serve as a fish propagation area.’

Hundreds have united behind FAN’s alternative vision for the future of Freycinet — a strong show of support clearly demonstrated at the January public meeting, where community members gathered to voice their concerns and call for a better path forward.

The current proposal includes a 350+ space industrial-scale carpark at Coles Bay, designed to push visitation to around 640,000 people per year — a scale that would permanently change the character of this place.

As highlighted in The Mercury, this issue goes to the heart of what kind of planning lutruwita/Tasmania’s national parks deserve.

“What the Government’s doing through their master plan – which we don’t see as a master plan, we see it as a business plan — doesn’t respect the values of the local community or the park.

All the government is thinking about is quantity, whereas we’re saying, let’s be strategic about the quality of the visitor experience.”

FAN's vision is before new carparks are built to enable ever increasing numbers of visitors to access Freycinet National Park, FAN recommends a smart parking system be implemented at existing carparks. If a new carpark must be built, the best location for any additional carparking is at the existing Freycinet Visitor Centre.

This isn’t about stopping tourism. It’s about getting the balance right. It’s about protecting the environmental and social values that define Freycinet, avoiding overdevelopment and overuse, and ensuring this extraordinary place can be experienced — and safeguarded — for generations to come.

Take Action for Freycinet!!! 📢

The stunning Freycinet Peninsula is facing a major threat: a proposed 350+ space industrial-scale car park at Coles Bay — a development that could push visitation to an unsustainable 640,000 people per year 🚨

FAN believes there’s a better way.

Before building new car parks to drive ever-increasing visitor numbers into Freycinet National Park, we’re calling for a smart parking system at existing sites to manage access responsibly. If additional parking is absolutely necessary, the most appropriate location is at the existing Freycinet Visitor Centre — not on a beautiful wildflower meadow full of already threatened plant species at Coles Bay.

This is about protecting Freycinet’s wildlife, landscapes, and visitor experience for generations to come.

Here’s how you can help:
1️⃣ Write to your local MP
2️⃣ Contact the Minister, Shadow Minister & Spokesperson for Parks
3️⃣ Reach out to Glamorgan Spring Bay Council

If the DAP Bill passes it will remove our right to appeal developments. All we will be able to do is comment and maybe participate in a hearing, and that’s it.

If this Bill passes it will be a disaster for our National Parks and Reserves, including our World Heritage Areas.

Please write to the State Parliamentarians and come to PMAT’s pop up actions outside Parliament.

Please share!

🚨 TWO URGENT ACTIONS – The DAP Gremlin is coming to Parliament! 🚨

PMAT has been working tirelessly to stop the introduction of DAPs (Development Assessment Panels) in lutruwita/Tasmania. Disturbingly, the third iteration of the DAP Bill is now on the table – barely changed, still deeply flawed and highly undemocratic.

Despite overwhelming community and local council opposition, the State Government is unrelenting in its ambition to remove Councils and communities from planning and give more power to developers.

DAPs would take planning decisions away from councils and communities and hand more power to developers. Appeal rights would be removed, and major projects could be fast-tracked on private and public land — even in World Heritage Areas, National Parks and Reserves. Including developments already refused, such as the kunanyi/Mt Wellington cable car, high-rise buildings in Hobart, gondolas in Cataract Gorge, and new large-scale projects like the Skylands subdivision at Droughty Point and the UTAS proposed re-development.

The Legislative Council voted down a near-identical Bill in November 2024. It’s expected back in Parliament from 3 March 2026.

We stopped it once. We can stop it again.

👉 URGENT ACTION 2: Join us outside Parliament House for a Pop-Up Action, 1–1:30pm on 3, 17, 24 March & 14 April.

Freycinet needs our protection! 🚨

FAN is calling for support to protect a public reserve at Coles Bay—home to over 1,000 already-threatened plant species—from a proposed 350+ car park. This fragile wildflower and orchid meadow should be protected, not concreted over. The development would drive visitation to Freycinet up to 640,000 people each year, placing even more pressure on an already vulnerable landscape.

To help safeguard this extraordinary place, join us for an intimate evening soirée celebrating and defending the natural beauty of Freycinet.

Set within a historic home overlooking the River Derwent, the evening will feature drinks, dinner, and a live performance by a trio of string musicians. Guests are invited to wander the gardens, take in sweeping river views, and connect with experts sharing insights into the remarkable ecological values of Freycinet National Park.

All funds raised will directly support Freycinet Action Network’s planning and conservation efforts, helping protect one of the most ecologically significant wildflower meadows in the country—so it can remain intact and cherished for generations to come.

UPDATE: A Better Vision for the Future of Freycinet

Thank you to the 100+ people who attended FAN's event: A Better Vision for the Future of Freycinet on 25 January 2026 at Coles Bay.

You can watch a video of the event here: https://www.facebook.com/FreycinetActionNetwork/videos/3227020050805226

The beautiful Freycinet Peninsula is under threat from a proposed 350+ industrial-scale parking lot at Coles Bay, set to double visitation to a reckless 640,000 people per year.

We will be sharing more details on our vision soon.

The following five motions were all passed by a clear majority:

1. The meeting calls for a Review of the Freycinet Peninsula Master Plan through a regenerative tourism lens.

2. Maintain the existing Freycinet Visitor Centre as the main gateway for Freycinet National Park.

3. Before new carparks are built to enable ever increasing numbers of visitors to access Freycinet National Park, the meeting calls for the implementation of a smart parking system at existing carparks.

4. Implement a trial shuttle bus system based at the existing Freycinet Visitor Centre to key locations.

5. If the Smart parking and shuttle system fails to better manage the flow of traffic, and if a new carpark must be built, the best location for any additional carparking is at the existing Freycinet Visitor Centre between two existing carparks.

To continue supporting our critical work in advocating for the future and protection of Freycient please join us for our fundraising event next week:
