Hyperloop at Virginia Tech Virginia Tech Hyperloop is a student led design team competing in the SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition.

Hyperloop at Virginia Tech was founded in September 2015, succeeding the announcement of the SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition. In January 2016, Hyperloop at Virginia Tech attended the SpaceX Hyperloop Design Weekend. Over 1000 design teams submitted applications to this exclusive event, and through careful deliberation from SpaceX, more than 120 teams from over 20 countries were chosen to be prese

nt. At Design Weekend, Hyperloop at Virginia Tech earned fourth place in the Build and Design category. Our commendable finish granted the opportunity to attend Competition I last January at the SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California, where our fully functional pod received fourth place overall out of 27 teams. Indispensable data was collected during Competition I that sculpted goals and shaped the vision for Competition II this upcoming summer. Our team is pioneering state of the art technology and groundbreaking design concepts to bring the Hyperloop pod to fruition. As the forerunning design team at Virginia Tech, member recruitment was a top priority and continues as such today. Since its inception, the design team has developed into a twenty-nine member strong team.

Our Story

Hyperloop at Virginia Tech was founded in September 2015 after SpaceX announced its first Hyperloop Pod Competition. In January 2016, Hyperloop at Virginia Tech attended the SpaceX Hyperloop Design Weekend. Over 1000 design teams submitted applications to this event, and SpaceX selected approximately 120 teams from over 20 countries to attend. At Design Weekend, Hyperloop at Virginia Tech earned fourth place in the Build and Design category. Our high placement gave us the opportunity to attend Competition I in January 2017 at the SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California, where our fully functional pod received fourth place overall out of 27 teams. During Competition II, we certified our pod through rounds of preliminary checks, including: a structural test, a navigation test, a functional test, a vacuum chamber test, and propulsion approval. In 2017, Hyperloop at Virginia Tech was once again invited to compete in a SpaceX Competition; our design was the most ambitious yet, and although we were unable to take our pod to Competition III, we are now looking forward to Competition IV in Summer 2019 where we hope to make a successful test run and represent the prestige of our University!
