On the 9th of October we celebrate the birth of Guru Ram Das Ji, the Fourth Sikh Guru, who is remembered for his boundless compassion and healing grace.

His life began in hardship. As young Bhai Jetha, he was an orphan who sold boiled beans to support himself. He gave himself fully to serving Guru Amar Das Ji, working in the langar and taking on the hardest tasks with joy. Even after becoming Guru he kept serving, and one visitor was surprised to find him in the kitchen washing dishes.

His example reminds us that seva is not about being seen or keeping count. It is about the love we bring to it, because the Guru knows what is in our hearts.

Dhan Dhan Guru Ram Das Ji.

On 19 Assu we honor the Joti Jot of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. He spent his final years in Kartarpur, where people of every faith came to sit with him. Sikhs, Hindus and Muslims each saw him as their own, so when his time drew near they could not agree on his last rites. Guru Ji asked them to bring flowers and place them at his side. Whichever stayed fresh overnight would decide.

After Sohila and Japji Sahib were recited, he was covered with a sheet and left alone. In the morning the sheet was lifted and his body was gone. Every flower on both sides was still fresh. Two memorials still stand on the banks of the Ravi, one raised by Sikhs and Hindus and one by Muslims.

This is Joti Jot, light merging with Light. Only his body passed. His light lives on through each Guru after him and in Sri Guru Granth Sahib today. Where do you see the One Light in others? We would love to hear your reflections below.

Dhan Dhan Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
