HAWTHORNE, NJ - The Borough officially celebrated the groundbreaking of its new Community Pavilion, located in the rear of the Louis Bay the 2nd Public Library and Community Center on Lafayette Avenue, marking the beginning of an exciting project that will “transform the library grounds into a vibrant community gathering space.”
On July 15, officials gathered with their shovels to mark this Neighborhood Preservation Program (NPP) project. “We are especially proud to have partnered with the Lions Club and Rotary Club. Together, we were able to build upon their original vision by utilizing NPP grant funding to create something even greater—a beautiful community gathering place and focal point that will serve Hawthorne residents for generations to come,” NPP Grant Coordinator Nancy Agnello said.
“Construction is already underway, and we look forward to inviting the community back for the ribbon-cutting ceremony and a celebration marking the completion of this exciting project,” she said.
The project originated several years ago through the vision of the Lions Club and Rotary Club, which sought to honor the late Mayor Richard S. Goldberg with a memorial. Through the leadership of the Borough's Neighborhood Preservation Program (NPP), that vision evolved into a larger community destination designed to serve residents of all ages.
The completed project will include a pavilion, accessible walkways, attractive landscaping, memorial benches, picnic tables, and other outdoor amenities that will provide a welcoming space for concerts, children's activities, reading programs, community events, and everyday recreation.
“The Community Pavilion represents exactly what the Neighborhood Preservation Program was created to accomplish,” Agnello said. “By bringing together civic organizations, Borough leadership, volunteers, local businesses, and grant funding.
“Special recognition goes to Mayor John Lane and the Council for not only the acquisition of the grant, but also for their constant support and encouragement.”
Those who contributed to the latest project:
Lions Club and Rotary Club for their original vision and financial support; the Neighborhood Preservation Program Stakeholders for their leadership, insightfulness and planning; Nancy Agnello, NPP Grant Coordinator, Joe Wililko of the Rotary Club; and Steve Rogalski, President of the Lion’s Club, for coordinating countless project details; and Kevin Downes and Downes Tree Service for generously donating the site preparation and the foundation work for the pavilion.
“Once completed, the Community Pavilion will serve as a lasting focal point for the community,” Agnello said, “providing residents with a beautiful outdoor space for recreation, education, entertainment, and community gatherings while further enhancing Hawthorne's Gateway District.”
