Join us for an evening of collective learning and regeneration. We’re gathering in community to explore how bioremediation can support the healing of fire-impacted landscapes across Southern California.

🌟 Featuring:

Mia Maltz | Soil Microbial Ecologist

Danielle Stevenson | Environmental Toxicologist

Maya Elson | Regenerative Mycologist

Paulette Goyes | Applied Mycologist

This introductory presentation brings together environmental toxicologists, regenerative mycologists, soil microbial ecologists, and community organizers working on the frontlines of ecological restoration in Los Angeles, Altadena, and beyond.

🌱 Topics include:

-How fire affects soil and water

-Tools for soil testing and site assessment

-Mycoremediation and other methods for mitigating toxins

-Strategies to restore ecosystem and community health

This evening also kicks off a deeper training series for those ready to engage further.

This is happening this coming Sunday!
Now is the time to register 🙂

We are beyond thrilled to be taking this next step on our path towards developing ecologically-oriented methods for building wildfire resilience! As many of you know, we've been experimenting with various fungi and other microbes for a while, and have come to believe that this method developed by Keisha Ernst holds incredible potential. Please come and spread the word!

Workshop description:
Recent research is affirming what ecologists and permaculturists have long understood—soil microbes play a critical role in mitigating the impacts of catastrophic wildfires, erosion and flooding. Join soil biologists and master composters Keisha and Casey Ernst (Soil Matters, Catalyst BioAmendments) and wildfire resilience mycologist Maya Elson (Fenix Fungi, SJSU, UCSC) in a hands-on workshop where you'll learn how beneficial soil microbes can contribute to ecosystem resilience.
With the rising costs of fire insurance, erosion control, and fire prevention, this workshop will introduce alternative strategies that are both ecologically beneficial and cost-effective. Participants will gain practical skills by constructing a "Mother Bed" compost pile using local materials and microbes from the CZU Lightning Complex Burn Scar. This compost bed will serve as a resource for fire prevention, flood mitigation, and ecological restoration, offering adaptable and affordable techniques for use in other ecosystems. A great opportunity for anyone living in or near wildfire and flood-prone areas.

Accessbility Info: There will be some walking on uneven ground, some standing and some sitting. Hands-on participation not required, please take care of yourself 🙂

The scientists and mushroom nerds over at CoRenewal are excited to be joining the community from September 26–29 at Brown Bottle Farm in Mulino, Oregon!
We’ll be talking about our team’s findings as we’ve just completed the third and final year of the FENiXS project (https://www.fenixsfungi.com/), our Fire Ecology in X-site Study into post-fire microbial inoculation as a tool for mycoremediation.
Join us as we discover together the song and dance of mycoremediation. To learn more about this fungi-loving event or to join us there, go to radmyco.com.

CoRenewal was recently awarded the Stuntz Mycology Fund to conduct a macrofungal survey. The Stuntz Mycology Fund was founded in 2017 to honor the memory of Dr. Daniel E. Stuntz, a beloved professor of Botany and Mycology at the University of Washington.
Spearheaded by Taylor Akers and Taye Bright, this research project will add to our knowledge of fungal diversity within Southern Oregon and highlight key species of macrofungi that thrive in post-fire landscapes using the recently burned areas of Jackson County, Oregon. Sampling will occur in Fall 2024 and Spring 2025. Photos of all specimens will be uploaded to iNaturalist, and the fund will cover the DNA sequencing of specimens for further identification. Tune in for updates on this project later this year!
(Including a photo of Daniel Stuntz himself, because if he’s a fascinating individual that anyone who is interested in the field of mycology should check out)
