Orthodox Christian Lent
In the Christian Orthodox Church, Great Lent marks the forty days leading to the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ ( the 40 days before Holy Week ). The first day of Great Lent is called Clean Monday. Orthodox Great Lent this year begins on Monday, March 3 and concludes with the Presanctified Liturgy on Friday of the Sixth Week. The next day is called Lazarus Saturday, the day before Palm Sunday. The Serbian Orthodox Churches - pictured below - along with other Orthodox Churches in our area will be holding special services during this time.

Why 40 days of Fasting?
1 - The pattern of fasting and praying for 40 days is seen in the Christian Bible, on which basis the liturgical season of Lent was established.
2 - In the Old Testament, the prophet Moses went into the mountains for 40 days and 40 nights to pray and fast "without eating bread or drinking water" before receiving the Ten Commandments.
3 - Likewise, the prophet Elijah went into the mountains for 40 days and nights to fast and pray "until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God" when "the word of the Lord came to him"
4 - In the New Testament, Jesus went into the desert to fast and pray for 40 days and 40 nights; it was during this time that Satan tried to tempt him before he began his public ministry.

Fasting During Lent, Fish Fries, etc.
1 - Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting AND abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence.
2 - For members of the Roman Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal.
3 - The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members from age 14 onwards.

Ash Wednesday
This week, many Christian churches observed Ash Wednesday. This day is traditionally observed with a holy day of prayer and fasting. Many Christians attend special Ash Wednesday church services
( picture below is one of the several masses held for the parishioners of Avon Holy Trinity Catholic Church on that day ). Churchgoers receive ashes on their foreheads at the service. Ash Wednesday derives its name from the words that accompanies the placement of ashes, "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return."

Westward Ho! As we continue our look at the Lorain County churches, the most western church of Lorain County is Vermilion's First Baptist Church at 6716 West River Road - YES, on the west side of the Vermilion River. The congregation was founded in 1888 at 728 Main Street, next to the former Vermilion Town Hall (see pix below). A new facility was later built just south of the city limits on 5 acres of property near the Valley View subdivision. The congregation is a member of the Southern Baptist Convention.

Westward Ho! As we continue our look at the Lorain County churches, the second most western church is Vermilion's Trinity Lutheran Church at 3747 Liberty Ave. The church was founded in 1957 and had its first service on Trinity Sunday at the Vermilion-on-the-Lake clubhouse. Trinity is part of the largest Lutheran body in North America, founded in 1988 when three North American church bodies united: the American Lutheran Church, Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches, and the Lutheran Church In America.

Westward Ho! As we continue our look at the Lorain County churches, the third most western church is Vermilion's Lakeview Baptist Church. The church began in 1961. Its first location was the Vermilion-On-The-Lake Clubhouse, Soon after, they moved to Ferndale Avenue, just south of Liberty Ave.

What is the most northern church in Lorain County? Is it Trinity Lutheran in Vermilion, Brownhelm Congregational, or Lorain Saint Anthony's right on the lake??? The answer is Avon Lake Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church at the corner of Rte. 6 and Rte. 83 ( 14 miles from the Lorain County Court House ).

Lorain County's most northern city - Avon Lake - is unique in that it not only has the northern most church in the county, but almost all others are located on one street - Electric Blvd. Three of these are Avon Lake Anchor Church, Avon Lake Presbyterian Church, and Lake Shore United Methodist Church.
