Many children have regained their hearing today thanks to a group of volunteer doctors, led by Dr. Salpy Akaragian, the founder of the initiative. "With the placement of devices, children can now hear, which brings me immense joy," she shared in an interview with Public Radio.
In 2003, Dr. Salpy Akaragian, founder and president of the Armenian International Medical Foundation, launched this initiative to restore hearing for deaf children, working alongside Dr. Akira Ishiyama. The program relies on a dedicated team of volunteer doctors, the majority of whom are young professionals from the United States.
In Armenia, approximately 3 out of every 1,000 newborns are born deaf, and at least one can be treated with surgery to regain the ability to hear.
"We started performing these hearing device implantations in the U.S. back in the 1980s. In 2003, we began implementing the program in Armenia, and over the last 20 years, 250 children have undergone surgery. Parents place their trust in us, hoping their child will begin to hear, and after that, speak. It is ideal to perform the surgery before the child is 2 years old. We take time to explain the entire process to the parents, and I’m pleased to say that this November marks Dr. Akira Ishiyama’s 28th trip to Armenia. He is an exceptional surgeon. This will be our 28th medical mission. Back in 2004, Gevorg was our first patient, and now he’s a dentist. Our foundation’s mission is to ensure that this program reaches every child who is born deaf or loses their hearing later in life," Dr. Salpy explained.
The mission team consists of 12-15 members, gathering from Armenia, the U.S., Moscow, and other regions. Young professionals are also included to carry on the work in the future.
In recent years, they have partnered with the Prime Minister's Office and the Ministry of Health.
Each year, 20-25 children receive surgery, with an average of 15 cases per year.
This interview was conducted during the Second Diaspora Summit in Yerevan.
Dr. Salpy Akaragian was also the director of the International Nurses Program at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Health System, overseeing the activities of approximately 3,000 nurses from over 20 countries. She also lead efforts to accredit nurses.
In collaboration with various organizations, Dr. Akaragian has established a nursing education program in Armenia, from which more than 400 nurses have graduated to date.
