Thanks to Australian business man, Mark Balla, some schools in India are seeing a return of their girl students!

Australian Mark Balla has built over 100 toilets for girls in schools in Nashik so that they do not dropout without completing their education.

Officials in Thane decided to build a small school directly on the street where the community lived. The school opened in June last year, with four full-time teachers, and a handful of volunteers.

Staff say they spent the initial months teaching the children about the importance of cleanliness and grooming, and not to fight or abuse each other.

"Childhood was missing from these children, so we started with that," said Aarti Sushant Param, who trains the teachers.

In Hyderabad, India, they are examining the reasons for low participation of girls in education, including the socio-economic factors with resultant gender bias, and suggesting ways to reduce gender disparity.

They will also identify infrastructure gaps such as non-availability and/or non-functionality of girls toilets which impede retention of girl students and compile best practices adopted by states/UTs for raising standards of girls education.

More efforts are needed to keep marginalised children in school and ensure learning by providing quality education. Even after the enactment of Right To Education Act of 2009 and schemes like midday meal scheme to provide lunch to school going children, the dropout rates are very high. Approximately two-fifth of the students leave school before completing elementary education.
