India Street School Educating the children of India who otherwise don't have access to a school. India has the largest population of underprivileged children in the world.

Over 1 million homeless children live on the streets of Mumbai alone. Without a change in the course of their lives, they will be exploited. The boys will be recruited for slave labor and the girls for sexual labor. The India Street School will provide an opportunity for some of these children to obtain an education that will lead to jobs and a way up and out of poverty.

Officials in Thane decided to build a small school directly on the street where the community lived. The school opened in June last year, with four full-time teachers, and a handful of volunteers.

Staff say they spent the initial months teaching the children about the importance of cleanliness and grooming, and not to fight or abuse each other.

"Childhood was missing from these children, so we started with that," said Aarti Sushant Param, who trains the teachers.

More efforts are needed to keep marginalised children in school and ensure learning by providing quality education. Even after the enactment of Right To Education Act of 2009 and schemes like midday meal scheme to provide lunch to school going children, the dropout rates are very high. Approximately two-fifth of the students leave school before completing elementary education.
