Trekopedia is a community-driven collection of in-depth information and resources on great long-distance hiking and bicycling trails. Each trail includes highly accurate GPS tracks that anyone can download plus details on where to stay, available services (markets, banks, pharmacies, bike repair shops, etc), attractions (historical ruins, museums, and so on), communities (villages, towns, and cit
ies), and points of interest (such as fresh water sources, waymarks, and landmarks). Sophisticated mobile apps have also been created for each trail, published as ‘TrekRight’ and ‘BikeRight’. Your genial hosts are Eugene, Dmitry, and Nick. Eugene, based out of Toronto, Canada (go Leafs!), is an avid hiker passionately trying to get in every last possible hike before his increasingly creaky body finishes giving out on him. Dmitry, a veteran Ukraine-based software engineer, is passionately trying to not end up with an increasingly creaky body. Nick, a professional magician from Canada, is planning a ‘walking world tour’ to bring close-up magic to the masses (whether they damn well want it or not…). Eugene mostly oversees operations and content-related stuff, including researching treks, running the website, writing the content, user support, and designing our apps. If you spot anything wrong with our content or apps, he’s the guy to blame (er, to whom you should send feedback). Dmitry is our chief technologist, responsible for our powerful custom-built content management system that we use for researching, writing, and managing all of our trek-related content (no small task!). And, of course, he’s responsible for building our outstanding mobile apps too, handling architecture and coding, as well as much of the design, plus he does testing, helps brainstorm new features, and generally makes sure the apps do exactly what they are supposed to do. Nick is our social media guru, helping keep everyone aware of what’s happening with Trekopedia and on the trails we cover. He also helps with research, writing, general operations, and sharing with one and all the occasional devilishly-clever sleight-of-hand card trick. And we consider the entire long-distance hiking/cycling community (yes, every last one of you!) to be a part of our team too since this project wouldn’t be possible at all without them — so many members of the community have generously provided great content and feedback making Trekopedia immeasurably better than it would have been otherwise! This is our way of giving back to the long-distance hiking / cycling communities that helped us so much in our own treks.
