Life with birds is never dull. When you mix a disabled bird and a young bird who "loves hard" it makes it even more interesting. While this looks shocking we figured it's a good opportunity to remind people to always have some kind of emergency fund for their birds. While this injury was actually superficial it could have been a catastrophic injury, and to be on the safe side he was seen at the vet the same day and cost us an unexpected $200. Two days later he looks like nothing ever happened.

Our flock loves freeze dried chop and our friends at Primal Blend do an amazing job of keeping everyone interested by making every single batch different from the last.

We first found their products on Amazon and we're officially hooked. We're not sponsored but we highly recommend the product and if you want to go to their website at www.primal-blend.com and use code PRIMAL10 you can get 10% off your order plus free shipping

This interaction highlights something very important about CAGs. In the beginning you see Apollo ask for a snack and even initially showed interest in wanting to step up. He quickly changed his mind and decided all he really wanted was the snack.

The number one issue we come across with people who want to own CAGs and people who already own them is that they're misreading signals from the bird and looking for an unrealistic level of engagement from them. Most CAGs are very independent and want to hang out with you but not necessarily be held by you. If you think about all the amazing CAGs we see on social media think about the fact that normally they're not being held, how in fact you seldom ever see one on these popular pages being held. We love CAGs and we interact with ours daily but we probably spend less than 5 minutes a day holding them because that's not what they're interested in.

This is how we celebrate Earth Day... Instead of throwing boxes away they become enrichment. Sometimes they're empty... Sometimes their not.

I'm not sure how they closed this one honestly but it was pretty funny. The macaws aren't hormonal currently so they can play in the box to their hearts content 😂

I have never picked a more fitting name... Cayenne has been a spicy wild child since she hatched 4 years ago.

Note: This first picture was taken while she was still at the pet store trying to be weaned. That ball was left on the top of her cage overnight and she climbed up and pulled it through. 😂 They found her like this the next morning

Happy hatch day Cayenne Marie

A day late.... still valid though 😂

This little boy should have been named Tigger the way he bounces around... But since he hatched on 4.20 his name is Snoop 😂. Happy hatch day to our bouncy green weirdo

Lily rejects the idea of spring cleaning

We're still fundraising for our medical fund but our daily shenanigans still continue. You can donate on our website at www.tikosway.org or directly to the vets office at Evergreen Avian and Exotics 253-564-4425

It's been awhile but let's talk about our girl Sammy. For those who don't know she was dropped off at a wildlife center and when we picked her up she was covered in bruises, had a broken wing, had a raging infection, was in liver failure and to top it all off she had what we thought was a golf ball sized hernia (it was bigger). After months of antibiotics, special diets, more blood work than I can even remember and lots of rehab she finally had surgery back in January.

We were hopeful that would be the end of her medical saga but sadly it was not. Post surgery she had unrelenting diarrhea... Yes that's as bad as it sounds... For 10 STRAIGHT WEEKS. 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫. As terrible as it was for us it was even worse for her... She had to be confined to her cage it certain areas... Her diet and fluid intake hadv to be closely monitored... And she was recovering from surgery so we had to constantly monitor that she was staying clean. Again we were hoping we were done with her saga... Sadly once again we were incorrect. Unfortunately something is wrong again and while we knew there could be side effects of such a massive surgery or that her liver issues could resurface we were hoping we were in the clear.

So here's where we are. Tikos maintains a medical fund... But Sam's care has completely emptied it. She's looking at probably another $800-$1000 in tests (repeat X-rays, barium, cbc MiDog etc). To continue providing Sam with the care she needs we're hoping our community will chip in and help. To donate you can go to our website www.tikosway.org or you can donate straight to the vets office at Evergreen Avian & Exotics 253-564-4425
