March 2026 is coming in like a lion--or a very fiery horse. The week of March 8, 2026, is one for which to prepare by checking your preparedness supplies. Forecasts for the week predict significant rainfall and potential for flooding throughout the week. Go to https://dod.hawaii.gov/hiema/ for help preparing. The Hawaii State Department of Health advises the community to take precautions as elevated volcanic gas emissions from the Kīlauea eruption can produce vog (volcanic smog – hazy air pollution caused by the volcanic emissions) that can result in poor air quality across the islands. Vog can be hazardous to human health, especially for sensitive populations.

Short term exposure to elevated levels of SO2 and PM2.5 may cause temporary eye, nose, or throat discomfort, coughing, or increased mucus production. At higher concentrations or during prolonged exposure, more noticeable respiratory symptoms, including difficulty breathing or worsening of existing lung conditions, may occur.
