Masjid Al-Aqsa (Arabic:المسجد الاقصى, is the third holiest place for Muslims, located in the Old City of Jerusalem.
The Prophet Muhammad-salAllahu alayhi wasallam was transported from the Sacred Mosque in Mecca to al-Aqsa during the Night Journey and led all the prophets of the past in prayer there. When the Crusaders captured Jerusalem in 1099, they used the masjid as a palace and church, but its function as a masjid was restored after it was freed by Salahuddin Ayyubi. Today, the Old City is under Israeli occupation, but the masjid remains under the administration of the Palestinian-led Islamic waqf.
