Caregiving is love in action — but it can also be exhausting, emotional, and often invisible.

ReMend Caregiver Mentor Shanell recently shared a moving reflection about supporting her fiancé, Emmitt, who is also a ReMend Mentor, through his kidney transplant journey.

Her words are honest, raw, and deeply important. They remind us that caregivers need support, too.

To every caregiver navigating kidney disease, dialysis, transplant, or the unknown:
We see you. You are not alone.

Kidney disease affects more than the body.

It can bring fear, stress, sadness, uncertainty, and major life changes — especially for people on dialysis, waiting for transplant, recovering from transplant, or managing chronic kidney disease.

During Mental Health Awareness Month, ReMend recognizes the emotional side of the kidney journey. Peer support does not replace professional mental health care, but talking with someone who understands can help patients feel less alone.

If you are struggling, please talk with your healthcare team or a mental health professional. You can also find mental health guidance from the National Institute of Mental Health here:

When you're ready, ReMend is here to offer connection and support from lived experience. https://remend.org/

Mental health includes emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, act, make choices, and relate to others.

Kidney disease education matters. But so does connection.

People navigating kidney disease often receive a lot of information — about labs, medications, dialysis, transplant, diet, appointments, and next steps.

But information alone does not always answer the questions people keep quietly:

What will this feel like?
How will my life change?
How do I talk to my family?
Will I still feel like myself?
How do I keep going when this feels overwhelming?

That’s where peer support matters.

ReMend connects patients and caregivers with mentors who understand the kidney journey through lived experience. Through programs like Ask a Mentor, ReMend Online Support Community, ReMend Renal Roundtable, and our growing mentor community, we create space for real conversations, practical encouragement, and support that helps people feel less alone.

Kidney disease may be part of someone’s story — but it should not be the whole story.

If you or someone you love is navigating kidney disease, ReMend is here to help you feel less alone, more informed, and supported.

This story from Sharp is such a beautiful example of hope in action.

A coworker stepped forward to donate a kidney to a fellow employee — and in doing so, gave her the chance to move forward with life in a whole new way.

For people living with kidney disease, stories like this matter. They open the door to conversations that can feel intimidating, emotional, or overwhelming. Living donation is a serious and personal decision, but education helps people understand what is possible.

Sometimes the first step is simply learning more. Sometimes it is having the courage to start the conversation.
