One of our leaders was asked a question, and committed to answer here, so the information would be accessible ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
(Answers are the parent-to-parent personal experiences and are not legal advice)

❓❓❓
What do same-sex couples do about representation on the birth certificate?
❓❓❓

⭐️Local parent response:⭐️
“When they came into the room with the verification of birth facts form, we just let them know that we had a family of two moms and no Dad. She left and brought a new form, and both of the blanks said mother instead of mom/dad. She didn’t even bat an eye! It was super easy.
“Birth certificate is the same, with two mothers listed and no blank or anything for a father. We didn’t have to tell them anything when we got her birth certificate, because they just match what’s on the copy of the verification of birth facts that you give them!”♥️♥️♥️

⭐️Out-of-state parent response:⭐️
“We did a lot of research when we were planning to get pregnant so we could understand what our rights are as same-sex parents and what we needed to do to make sure we both had parental rights to our daughter. I know that the laws and policies vary quite a bit from state to state, because as I was reading about it I learned how different states handle things.

Ultimately, my wife and I decided to work with a family law attorney and I’m really grateful we did because it can be complicated and it was important to us to get it right.

We live in South Carolina and the laws here allow for some flexibility on birth certificates. *Birthing patent* is listed as the mother because she gave birth and *I* am listed as Parent. The hospital had a form for us to complete and this was one of the options.

I know of a couple in Louisiana who the non-birthing mother is listed as Father on the birth certificate. I also know some states don’t allow the other same-sex parent to be on the birth certificate. Birth certificates don’t guarantee any rights, so we are also doing a process called second parent adoption to secure my parental rights as the non-birthing parent.”⭐️

History is being made every day. In honor of Black History Month, join us as we spotlight a few modern day Black Breastfeeding History Makers.

On October 7, 2000, U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher MD, PhD released the Blueprint for Action on Breastfeeding establishing the first comprehensive breastfeeding policy for the nation. It introduced an action plan for breastfeeding based on education, training, awareness, support, and research.

Satcher stated that “Each of us, whether we play a role at the Federal, State, local, or private level, must turn these recommendations into programs best suited for our own communities. Together we can shape a future in which mothers can feel comfortable and free to breastfeed their children without societal hindrances.”
