The Novotel (Southampton) provided the venue for Charles Dickens Lodge No.8597’s 450th meeting.

The meeting branded as the ‘Grandest Night Out’ was officered by the Hants&IOW Provincial Craft team, led by RW. Bro. Jonathan Charles Whitaker - Provincial Grand Master Hampshire & IOW, assisted by:

W. Bro. Jonathan Bell PAGDC
W. Bro. Ian Preece PSGD - APGM
VW. Bro. David Perkis PGSwdB – Dep PGM
W. Bro. Christopher Bayliss PSGD – APGM
W. Bro. Rev David Heatley PAGChap
W. Bro. Bill Starkey PAGSwdB - ProvGDC
W. Bro. Christopher Lockwood PSGD - APGM
W. Bro. Adrian Cleightonhills PSGD - APGM
W. Bro. David Ryan PAGDC - ProvGSec
W. Bro. Paul Hillyard PAGSuptWks - APGM

The ceremony, a double initiation, free of the concerns of usual Lodge business due to it being considered an emergency meeting, was completed in an hour and a quarter.

As expected, the ceremony was delivered to an exceptionally high standard with a pace ensuring the candidates were relaxed and able to take in the experience as best they might. I’m sure it will live long in the memories of the candidates - how many of us can boast of such an entry into the Craft?

The ceremony’s highlight, for me at least, was seeing 5 Brethren deliver the Charge after Initiation, reinforcing the theme of Lodges sharing work and keeping as many as involved as possible. If the Provincial team can do this - so can we.

With over 200 Brethren seated at the Festive Board, the mood was as expected - With tables full of Masons laughing and enjoying the proceedings. Over £2000 was raised on the evening, with the lodge deciding to donate the proceeds to the MCF.

A very warm welcome for the APGM and his Es**rt last night at William Rufus Lodge No 6979 along with all their guests.

There was nothing but a quality performance from start to finish during the ceremony by all the Officers involved in the passing.

The candidate, Bro George Ashley, gave exemplary responses, and matched this also by the way he conducted himself throughout the evening.
