It may be a little chilly and rather damp underfoot, but there’s still plenty of beauty to enjoy at Ferne. 🍂

The landscape is ever-changing as we move further into autumn, so come and enjoy the changing views, see some of our animals going about their day, then warm up in the on-site café Perdidaatferne with a hot drink, light lunch, or both!

Volunteers needed across all seven of our charity shops!

Volunteering in our charity shops is a great way to gain experience within the retail sector, build your confidence and do something rewarding with any spare time you may have.

You’ll also develop practical skills that you can take forward, while seeing first-hand how your time helps raise vital funds for the animals in our care.

And it’s not just about what you can give. We offer volunteer open days and opportunities to meet other volunteers in our teams while our annual Volunteer Awards give us a chance to celebrate the people who give their time to Ferne.

Whether you can spare a few hours a week, or just at weekends, we’d love to hear from you.

Worried about boarding your pet? 🐾

We understand that leaving your dog or cat in someone else’s care can feel like a big decision. When you’re away, you want to know they’re happy, comfortable and being well looked after.

That’s why we take the time to get to know each pet and what they need to feel settled. Our experienced team will keep their usual routines in mind and make sure they have plenty of care and enrichment throughout their stay.

When they need us, we’re there. ♥️

While an animal is with us, we’re responsible for making sure they receive the veterinary treatment they need - whether they’re here for a short time, waiting for their new home, or here for life.

And right now, we have some significant essential care costs ahead of us.

🐱 Six of our cats need dental treatment. Yes, you read that right - six! Each procedure is expected to cost around £700 or more, so that’s a hefty chunk for us to find.

Then there’s Callie (pictured) one of our dogs, who needs treatment for entropion, a condition where the eyelids turn inwards, causing discomfort and irritation.

These aren’t optional extras. Dental problems and eye conditions can cause pain and discomfort, so getting the right treatment is an important part of keeping animals healthy and comfortable while they’re with us.

Our Essential Care Appeal is in place to help us cover the ongoing veterinary costs of caring for the animals at Ferne - around £28,600 year to date.

Did you know we have resident degus?! 🐭

You may have visited Ferne without ever realising these little characters are part of our animal family. And, despite being most active during the day, they’re not always the easiest residents to spot!

Degus are diurnal, which means they’re awake and active during daylight hours. They spend their days exploring their enclosure, foraging, grooming and socialising with one another – although they’re pretty good at disappearing out of sight when visitors stop to have a look!

So, if you’ve missed them on a previous visit, here’s one of our two sweet little degu seeing who’s about.

Today we’re celebrating all creatures great and small – and here at Ferne, that means every one of our residents.

Our sheep are making the most of the fresh autumn grass and sunshine, with plenty of eating and plenty of resting as they put on a little extra weight and prepare for the long winter ahead. 🍂☀️

Lisa has kindly chosen to leave her legacy to Ferne, helping to provide a safe and caring home for animals who need us. Thank you so much, Lisa.

“I am a single person and I am very fortunate in that, while I don’t have many liquid assets, I do own my home, and if all goes well I should own it outright and be mortgage free in just over ten years.

I realised that when I’m gone, this will be quite a significant amount of capital, and without any family or children, if I did nothing it would either go to someone I barely know or to the Crown.

Ferne won my heart when I learned that any animals who can’t be rehabilitated and rehomed are cared for long-term at the sanctuary. Knowing this, I feel my legacy could make a real difference. For that reason, Ferne is the sole beneficiary of my estate”.
