Today is International !

From our earliest days, Meridian and our team have supported the use of a variety of harm minimisation practices to reduce the transmission of HIV in the ACT. One of the most effective ways of doing this has been the provision of the Needle & Syringe Program (NSP). NSPs are a public health initiative to provide sterile injecting equipment to reduce the harm that can come from sharing equipment.

Meridian is a secondary NSP. Meridian staff are trained to provide this service during business hours. We have a large sharps disposal bin at the front of the Meridian office, available 24 hours and a range of information and resources for people who use injecting drugs.

Fit Packs are available at our office in Turner during working hours.

May 7th is International Harm Reduction Day—a time to recognize life-saving strategies that reduce health risks, including the spread of HIV.

The AIDS Committee of Ottawa (ACO) plays a crucial role by providing clean equipment, ensuring safer choices, and reducing the risk of HIV transmission. Harm reduction is about support, dignity, and safety—not judgment.

Let’s honour ACO’s work and keep harm reduction at the heart of public health.

May 7th is International Harm Reduction Day. Harm reduction seeks to reduce harm and foster the health and well-being of people who use drugs. It has an immense impact on reducing overdose, the spread of HIV, and other negative health and social impacts of punitive drug policy.

Harm reduction services play a vital role in WA’s alcohol and other drug sector, supporting the health and wellbeing of people who use alcohol and other drugs.

On International Harm Reduction Day, 7 May 2025, we acknowledge these services and the importance of evidence-based approaches.

Harm reduction is about recognising the risks associated with alcohol and drug use and finding practical and compassionate solutions to reducing these harms.

For people who inject drugs, needle and syringe programs are a key part of this. They help prevent the spread of hepatitis C, HIV and other blood-borne viruses, while offering essential health information, referrals, and support.

Across Western Australia, a range of harm reduction services provide NSP access - often free or at a very low cost.

International Harm Reduction Day 2025

Harm reduction is a public health and social justice approach aimed at minimising the adverse outcomes associated with various behaviours, substances, or activities, particularly those that pose risks or potential harm to individuals or communities. It seeks to reduce overall harm and risks linked to these behaviours.

Substance Use: Harm reduction strategies can include providing sterile needles and syringes to reduce the transmission of blood-borne infections among people who inject drugs, distributing naloxone to reverse opioid overdoses, supply of safer smoking supplies and providing access to substitute prescribing, rehabs, drug testing and other wraparound support services.

Safer Alcohol Consumption: In the context of alcohol use, harm reduction may involve promoting responsible drinking, designated drivers, and alternatives to drinking and driving to reduce alcohol-related accidents and injuries.

Harm reduction is pragmatic and compassionate, recognising that not all individuals can or will cease engaging in risky behaviours or using substances, but they can still be supported in making safer choices to minimise the negative consequences of their actions.

Support us in destigmatising substance use and help us spread the word of harm reduction, not just today but all year round.
