SURJ Marin is the Marin County chapter of a national network of groups and individuals organizing white people for racial justice. Through community organizing, mobilizing and education, SURJ moves white people to act as part of a multi-racial majority for justice with passion and accountability. SURJ provides a space to build relationships, skills and political analysis to act for change. We envision a society where we struggle together with love, for justice, human dignity and a sustainable world.

Dear SURJ friends and family,

We at SURJ Marin have made the difficult decision to close our chapter. The struggle for racial justice is ongoing and vital, and continues through many local organizations doing great work in Marin County and the Bay Area. Our purpose has always been to educate and mobilize white people to work together in multi-racial spaces for the movement for racial justice. We have been very successful over the past 9 years, engaging in countless workshops for individuals and elected officials, protests, direct actions, book clubs, advocacy, and fundraising. We have partnered with local BIPOC-led organizations in the county, and through that support, we have raised and donated over $100,000 to them.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who showed up with us over the years. Whether you attended a meeting, joined a protest, participated in a workshop, donated, volunteered, or simply took the time to learn and grow, you helped build a stronger movement for racial justice in Marin. The relationships, conversations, and actions we shared together have made a lasting impact on our community.

While SURJ Marin is coming to a close, the work itself is not. The need for racial justice, belonging, and equity remains as urgent as ever. We believe the foundation built over these past nine years will continue to strengthen local efforts and inspire new forms of leadership, collaboration, and action.

As we consider our next steps, we encourage you to stay engaged and connected with organizations advancing this work every day. Some organizations to follow, support, and join include:

SURJ Bay Area
No Ice In Marin Coalition
Marin Rapid Response
MVFree
Marin DSA
Community Action Marin
First 5 Marin
Marin Organizing for Racial Equity (MORE)

We hope to connect with you again soon as we move into our next phase of work.

In solidarity,
SURJ Marin
