HK20 - Reminders: Who/What/How/ All in an "art" photo
Totally Preventable: Thousands of Deaths, Hundreds of Thousands Mentally Stressed, Infants and Children of Trauma whose very genetics may have been altered by the stress. This house is gone now, likely bulldozed by the Corps of Engineers. They only bulldozed good houses, and left the ones that floated around before settling somewhere else. Then they conducted pity tours that had to be stopped by ACORN and others in a strong outcry resulting in city legislation to stop tours.
This house especially close to the Industrial Canal., reminded one looking thru the ceiling of how well constructed so much of the vernacular housing, built by the very residents of the Lower 9th Ward. The owner's name Roy Van Halen, is not findable in the Tax Assessor database except at this location, or online anywhere.
The Corps never apologized for anything, though the Court found them liable for digging the unnecessary MRGO Mississippi River Gulf Outlet that flooded 80% of New Orleans and much of St Bernard Parish.
The Corps' actions were in direct support of the elite and developers who planned to take this neighborhood and other Black communities with the Green Dot strategy fought successfully by ACORN, when one year later a city code was established that prevented Eminent Domain of land if the house had been gutted. 2006 legislation was passed statewide to disallow Eminent Domain for any Economic Benefit by ACORN and a national operation that specialized in Eminent Domain laws - Alliance for justice.

Traveling from all over the country to protest to save the lower 9th ward, ACORN members led the fight for the right to return, winning a strategic code in August 2009 that prevented bulldozing/property seizures if a house had been gutted, ending the Green Dots campaign to take all of New Orleans Black neighborhoods and make them green areas. Later in the statewide election, a statewide law was passed by ACORN to prevent any Eminent Domain for profit or economic benefit sealing the deal.
