🔥 New research from Fire Ecology shows that prescribed fire can do more than reduce fuels—it can increase biodiversity. A study of temperate dry grasslands found that late-winter controlled burns, especially when some shrubs are left in place, boosted the diversity of spiders and ground beetles, including species of conservation concern. This is a helpful reminder for practitioners that thoughtful use of fire supports healthier, more resilient ecosystems—not just wildfire risk reduction. Read the open-access article here:

Background Temperate dry grasslands host diverse communities of predatory arthropods, yet their biodiversity is increasingly threatened by habitat degradation following the abandonment of traditional land-use practices. In many regions, restoring such practices is unfeasible or economically unsustai...

Fueling Collaboration: Flashy Fuels and Resilient Lands – Distinct Prescriptions for Eastern Grasslands
11:00 AM–12:30 PM EST

This session will bring together researchers and fire managers to explore how fire shapes and sustains eastern grasslands—both ancient remnants and reconstructed systems. Discussion topics include:
• Restoring and protecting herbaceous upland ecosystems
• Developing site-specific fire prescriptions for unique plant communities
• Addressing fragmentation, seed sourcing, fire suppression history, and climate impacts
• The value of intergenerational knowledge and regional networks in grassland fire management

🔥 Community Learning + Burning Opportunity
Check out this Cascadia PBA event in Partnership with CDLT - a chance for folks of all ages and experience levels to learn together, support good fire on the landscape, and help reduce hazardous fuels through community pile burning. A great way to build skills, connection, and fire-adapted landscapes.

Registration + details here: https://luma.com/af344n7q
Learn more about Cascadia PBA: www.cascadiapba.org

Thinning and burning piles are key steps in reducing hazardous fuel loads in the process of restoring healthy, fire-resilient forests. After completing an 80-acre thinning project on their Mountain Home property near Leavenworth, the Chelan Douglas Land Trust is hosting a community pile burning event to safely dispose of 8 acres of hand piles.

All Ages and Experience Levels Welcome

🔥 Bringing Good Fire Back to the Northwest! 🔥
Last month, fire practitioners, landowners, and community leaders gathered in Glenwood, WA for the first Pacific Northwest Prescribed Burn Association (PBA) Learning Exchange - an inspiring step toward restoring a shared culture of fire stewardship across our landscapes.

From strengthening relationships to building local burn capacity, this event highlighted how PBAs are helping communities safely use prescribed fire for healthier forests and safer communities.

It’s been a smoky fall for many Washington communities - a reminder that smoke is part of both wildland and prescribed fire, though the impacts and understanding within communities can differ.

By supporting and planning for prescribed fire, we can help reduce the intensity and scale of future wildfire smoke events.

Tomorrow, October 9th, tune in for an informational webinar on the new Smoke Ready Communities materials - tools designed to help communities prepare for and adapt to smoke.

Reminder to join us October 9th for an informational webinar all about our new Smoke Ready Communities materials!

🔥 Upcoming Webinar: Smoke Ready Communities 🔥

Join the Fire Adapted Communities Learning Network on October 9th for an informational webinar introducing their new Smoke Ready Communities materials!

Understanding and preparing for smoke is an important part of living with fire. While smoke from prescribed fire is often less intense than smoke from large wildfires, education around it is just as important—and helping people differentiate between the two matters for community health and resilience.

Join us October 9th for an informational webinar all about our new Smoke Ready Communities materials!

🔥 Healthy forests mean safer communities. Check out this new infographic from JFSP on landscape-scale fuel treatments... why they matter, how they work, and the impact they have on wildfire resilience.

In this week’s Friday Flash, JFSP is sharing our new, JFSP-developed infographic covering Landscape-Scale Fuel Treatments. By strategically placing fuel treatments at the landscape scale before the start of fire season, land managers and firefighters can create future opportunities for improved safety, more resilient ecosystems, and effective suppression before wildfires even start.
