🕯️ Every year, 1.9 million babies are stillborn.
That’s one every 17 seconds. Many of these deaths are preventable. And yet, in some countries, they aren’t even counted.

Dr. Aleena Wojcieszek shares her powerful story—what drew her into maternal and perinatal health research, and why she stays: because of the injustice of stillbirth.

Stillbirth is not just a health issue. It is tied to poverty, conflict, climate shocks, and inequality.

📢 “Once you see it, you can’t unsee it.”

We must count every baby. Support every family. Speak every name.

📽️ Watch and share this message. Together, we can break the silence.

Many fathers experience deep sorrow following stillbirth and neonatal death, an impact which is less talked about or acknowledged than the impact on mothers.

Midwives across high-burdened countries need training in stillbirth and neonatal bereavement care. The story below shows ISA's work in action. It is written by a Ugandan midwife trained in bereavement care, whose great work is changing lives in a positive way.

“Ruth, a 19 year old mother, was attending her antenatal clinic at a health center and was being treated for Malaria. When she was past her expected date of delivery, she experienced decreased movement of her baby. Being a first-time mother, she didn't receive adequate information about her pregnancy.

When she delivered her stillbirth baby, her mother-in-law blamed her for not taking good care of her grandchild while in the utero--an accusation that broke her down.

We had to make her mother-in-law understand all of the possibilities that could have led to the baby’s death, and that the mother was not to be blamed. On discharge day, the mother made a special request for the bereavement team to reach out to her community and raise an awareness of the causes of stillbirth. Often communities give families who have had stillbirths a very hard time, especially mothers. After a stillbirth, the woman is often sent back to her parents’ home, believing that her uterus is hostile. The family very much appreciated the bereavement care and wanted it started in their community that suffers from rampant stillbirth, so that families can understand that mothers are not to blame and rather should be supported. I kept following up on her. She is now fine, still at her marital home, and the family takes good care of her. All thanks to Birth With Dignity (BWD) care.” (Judith A. BWD leader)

Every mother throughout the world deserves to have a healthy birth and a healthy baby. Abeditho (photo) is a mother experiencing a healthy and educated birth plan. Yet, the number of stillbirths in high-burden countries remains high. Mothers of stillborn babies not only face stigma, but also need special bereavement care that often is missing. This training is central to one of ISA’s many missions. Please help us raise these important funds for advocacy, education, and awareness. Thank you! https://gofund.me/8339d69a
