Beautiful day in the woods, the woodcock were not in their usual haunts as they had thick layers of snow. Did a lot of walking today to put up six woodcock and harvest two. Theta had a gorgeous point with Diesel back that Bill and I both shot on the flush. Otto pointed the other bird. Woodcock were nervous today with all the noise we made through the woods. Diesel with a couple points that the birds flushed as we were walking in. Bill Heindl on the right will be 84 years old next month. I want to be able to walk like him at that age.

38 degrees, but you could feel the snow storm approaching. We did a couple mile walk and a little over two hours walk in the woodcock woods with Bill Heindl (who will be 84 next month) and Darrel Feasel before the snow starts flying tonight. We had eight pointed woodcock and Bill and Darrell shot one each. I did not fire a shot and enjoyed working the French Brittany’s and taking pictures. Pretty cool to spot them on the ground and take photos while the dogs are pointing them. See if you can find them in the photos.

Cold day with high of 37 and a lot of wind. 3 walks totaling 7 miles with TJ Mogush today and his French Brittany Sylvie.
The first walk, we flushed nine Woodcock seven of them were pointed. We were in really heavy Jack Pines and did not hit a single bird. Kona was the star of the show with many points and Diesel had a couple and Sylvie one. TJ learned the lesson of always trust your bird dog on point.
The second walk did not produce a single bird.
The third walk we got into a cover of 40+ Bob White Quail and I was in the middle of the field with the dogs and CJ on the edge pulled off a true double on the quail and we were able to retrieve both birds. we had multiple points from Otto and a point from Diesel on the singles. . Recover was incredibly thick. It was hard to even get to the dogs on point.

Afternoon 4.5 mile 3 hour walk. Seven pointed woodcock, blessed to harvest two. I thought I knocked down another, but the dogs and I could not find the bird. Lots of deer hunters in the parking lots, but I did not see a single person in the woods. A beautiful way to bring in the new year. 5 points by Diesel and 2 by Kona. Woodcock were in very thick cover.

Great day with Matt Smith and Chuck Lewis in the woodcock woods of Virginia. Hunted public land with in 1 hour of Richmond. 3.61 miles walked 3 1/2 hours. Flushed 28 and had three man limit. I limited in first 45 mins. Numerous points on walk out after we all limited. Had some kind of cat or squirrel walk over my truck while we were in the woods. Dogs found a possum and I had to put them up as the possum played dead, but then he walked off.

Virginia opening day last Monday for woodcock was fantastic. Bill who is 83 and I walked 2.74 miles in less than 3 hours and flushed 40+ woodcock. The only downside was our shooting and the mosquitos eating us alive if we stopped. All the dogs had numerous points. At one time there were three dogs on three different points within 30 yards of each other and two birds got up on each point.
