Meet Wanda Díaz-Merced. Wanda Díaz-Merced is a pioneering Puerto Rican astronomer who transformed how we explore the universe. After losing her sight in her early twenties, she refused to step away from science—instead, she changed the way science is done.

She developed a groundbreaking technique called sonification, which converts astrophysical data into sound, allowing her to “hear” signals from stars and galaxies, including complex radio data from space.

Through her work, she demonstrated that combining sound with visual data analysis can actually improve the detection of phenomena like black holes—expanding how scientists interpret the universe.

Wanda’s contributions didn’t just open new scientific methods—they reshaped accessibility in astronomy and proved that there are many ways to experience and understand the cosmos.

Black Hole Myths vs Facts. What’s true - and what science actually says.

Black holes aren’t monsters - they’re clues. Every discovery helps us understand the universe a little more.

In case you missed it: Want to learn more about space law? Here is our chat with two Space Law Experts: Joan Chesoni ex-Director at the Kenya Space Agency Board, representing the Attorney-General and Rosanna Deim-Hoffmann is the Lead for Space Law and Policy at the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) ! We had an awesome time speaking with them and seeing the Cosmic Girls ask questions.

Watch is here:

On This Day in History 🇬🇧🌌

British chemist Helen Sharman made history as the first British person—and the first British woman—to fly in space. A private citizen selected through the Project Juno program, she launched aboard a Soviet Soyuz spacecraft and spent time aboard the space station Mir.

Her journey showed that spaceflight is not only for military pilots or career astronauts, but also for scientists and civilians with curiosity, skill, and determination. During her mission, Sharman conducted experiments in microgravity, contributing to research in chemistry and materials science while representing a major milestone in international space collaboration.

Her flight helped open the door for broader participation in human spaceflight and remains a powerful reminder that space is accessible to many different paths—not just one.

Space missions need power—and electricians make it happen. Electricians install, maintain, and repair the electrical systems that support everything from launch facilities to research labs. Without reliable power, missions can’t get off the ground.

How to get there: Train through a technical program or apprenticeship in electrical work. Certifications and hands-on experience are key.

What they do:
Install and maintain electrical systems
Troubleshoot and repair issues
Support infrastructure for launches and facilities

Before liftoff, someone has to power the mission.

On May 14, 1973, NASA launched Skylab, America’s first space station and the first crewed research laboratory in space, aboard the final flight of the Saturn V rocket.

While the Soviet Union launched the first space station (Salyut) in 1971, Skylab represented a major leap forward—larger, more advanced, and designed for long-duration scientific research in orbit.

Over the course of its mission, three astronaut crews lived and worked aboard Skylab for 28, 56, and 56 days, conducting around 270 experiments across multiple fields. These included: Human health and how the body responds to space; Earth observation and environmental science; Solar astronomy and space physics; Materials science in microgravity.

Fast forward to today, the International Space Station (ISS) represents the next generation of orbital science—continuously occupied since 2000 and built through global collaboration.

Skylab (1973):
First U.S. space station
Crews stayed weeks at a time (up to 56 days)
~270 experiments total
Focused on early human spaceflight research, solar science, and Earth observation

ISS (2000–present):
Largest structure ever built in space
Continuous human presence for over 25 years
Thousands of experiments across biology, physics, Earth science, and tech
International partnership (NASA, ESA, JAXA, CSA, and others)
Long-duration missions lasting 6+ months

Skylab proved we could live and work in space. The ISS proved we could do it together—and keep going.

Happy International Day of Women in Mathematics! May 12 is a joyful opportunity for the mathematical community to celebrate women in mathematics. The celebration takes place every year, all around the world. The goal of the day is to inspire women everywhere to celebrate their achievements in mathematics, and to encourage an open, welcoming and inclusive work environment for everybody.

Samantha Cristoforetti (born 26 April 1977) is an Italian European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut and former Italian Air Force pilot and engineer. She is the second of two women sent into space by ESA and the first from Italy. Cristoforetti holds the record for the longest uninterrupted spaceflight by a European astronaut (199 days, 16 hours), and she held the record for the longest single space flight by a woman until this was broken by Peggy Whitson in June 2017,and later by Christina Koch. She took command of ISS Expedition 68 on 28 September 2022.

Today we celebrate International Day of Planetariums—a reminder of how these spaces bring the universe a little closer to Earth.

Planetariums let us travel through stars, galaxies, and planets without ever leaving our seats. They spark curiosity, inspire future scientists, and make space exploration accessible to everyone—no telescope required.

From classrooms to full-dome theaters, planetariums continue to connect people of all ages to the wonders of the cosmos and the science behind it.
